Alright guys...a lot of shit happening all at once, and I need some advice.

I'm getting married in March (don't think I've mentioned that on here yet), and my girl and I both want to get out of TX after we get married. Problem is, I don't know a place that I can get a job that isn't in TX, CA, or NY.

Im looking for a job preferably as a Linux admin (Debian/Redhat). I'm want to move to a non-hillbilly country with relatively cool temperatures (read not 90+ for 6 straight months).

I also need somewhere where we can get a decent house for 150k (adjusted for income difference in the area).

Most of the places in NE are either way out of my price range, way too old for my tastes, or just ghetto.

So I'm looking for places that have positions for my job types, houses < 30 years old, houses for under 150k, and not jersey/ny. My girl usually does business management or accounting, so I doubt she is going to have much trouble finding a job.

If my requests are too broad, do you think i should just try picking up perl or php? Seems like there are a LOT of jobs for developers out there. I dunno, I'm just going crazy trying to figure everything out. Feels like time is already ticking down.

you could be a remote consultant, like i am. my office is in Massachusetts but 3/4 of my client base is actually in the atlanta area.

If you pick up a job in NYC you can move to Portland, PA or Deleware Water Gap, PA. Both are just over the NJ border, very easy access to the highway. The traffic isnt great but living in NJ or NY is VERY expensive when compared to PA.

CT is the number 1 place in the country to find IT work.

fairfieldcountyjobs.com to start.

Already thought of and canceled denver out. she doesnt like living on/within 10 miles of mountains.

I did find a few decent leads on that website you posted, Cel. Thanks for the heads up...125,000 for 3+ years of experience....MWAHAHAHAHA...

try redmond, washington (basically seattle burb) or portland, oregon too. also wouldn't hurt to check minneapolis...but only if you like snowtastic winters that last 6 months.

ps, grats on the engagement! story?

nice link...no degree, but definitely worth a look.

16/22 buzz words.

every job i've ever applied for required a degree, including the one i'm at.
guess what? i have no degree.

the market is filled with shit. i must've interviewed 30 people since decemeber trying to fill an opening we have here... and not one have i felt remotely confident about hiring.

i made a 6 question quiz, multiple choice.
so far, no one has gotten a single question correct.
it's not that hard, really.
here, i attached it. you're not even a programmer and i bet you can get at least half right.

if you know your shit, the hardest thing about getting a job is landing an interview. once you're there, you can pretty much tell them that you're the shit and you won't find someone better than me (in not so many words).

ANSWERS: (hilite)

1- d
2- b
3- c
4 - d
5 - d
6 - b

i gave that quiz (^^) to the 'whizkid' 22yr old no-degree-holding developer here - took him 10 minutes to email me back with this ( i didn't have time to 'grade' it) -- hidden to keep it fun for others - highlight:

1. #image { float: left; } (but he notes that #image looks for an image with id="image", which doesn't exist in the sample code
so eithe rthe image needs to be <img id="image"... or the CSS needs to be img { ... }).
2. 2=b (and if "var" isn't a number it will cause an error); It is open to sql injection - furthermore, if Request("var") is not a number, it isn't even in quotes, so the query will flat out fail
3. Nothing 3=b in some browsers, c in others
4. All of the above
5. AJAX
6. firstChild

i think he aced it? anyway. that was kinda fun. good to know he's worth QA'ing for though i don't think telling him he passed your quiz is going to do his ego any favors! ;)

he makes some good points... i literally whipped that up 15 min before an interview one day and never even proof read it.
your guy aced it though.

yet another non-degree asshat  who actually knows WTF he is doing, vs all these master degree holders that don't know their ass from their elbow

i got all but the first 2...and ill admit i didnt really read the second one too closely. and the first one i still dont know why #content is wrong.
