Risk-Taking Thieves Steal Scrap Metal - News Story - WJAC Johnstown

Police in Somerset County are trying to figure out how a radio tower went missing in Windber. Police say a group of people had a very thorough plan to get all 120 feet of steel and copper down from the old Windber radio tower. Police believe the thieves threw cables over the guidelines of the tower and yanked it down with a truck. Police also found cut bolts and torch marks on nearby grass. Police say the tower had to be cut into small pieces in order to get it out of the wooded area, but they can't figure out how they did it without anybody noticing.

It's amazing what people will do nowadays.

I've heard of people gathering scrap metal for money, but to this extreme? Drugs are bad, mmmk?

It gets nuts around here. I work about a mile and a half from the metal scrapyards and recyclers, so I get to hear all the neat stories about what comes in. Stolen transformers, copper wire, manholes, catalytic converters (platinum = popular), the list can get rather interesting.

There was an abandoned house a couple towns over from mine that blew up because some crack heads broke into it and stole the copper gas pipes.

I love hearing about people trying to steal copper wire without realizing it's live.

One of the construction cranes here in town had all of the wire stolen out of it twice, and the turbo off of it once. Gotta love meth heads.

They just couldn't take the clutter of the tower on the hill. They had to clean it up.....they just couldn't leave it that way.

Here at work we usta have a 6 inch diameter alloy steel bar that was about 15 feet long layin behind our shop. It was solid bar, and weighed well over 1,000 pounds. That thing disapeared one night. Then, one day some guy with a few teeth left, and hair greasier then all the engines in the back of his pickup came and asked us about an 8 inch diameter by 1 or 2 inch wall tube that we had layin out back. It was about 20 feet long, and weighed around 2,000 pounds. Well, he offered us 40 bucks for it which we turned down, and he argued for a bit then begged for a bit and finally left. Next day, tubes gone. I just wish I coulda seen those pieces get loaded up. Im sure it was an amussing sight.

This doesn't surprise me at all. I had about 100 lbs of copper wire stolen out of my driveway last month. Someone made off with a whole 90 bucks of my money.

Since we are on the topic of metal...

What's the scoop with all these places that will do the whole "Gold Kit" things? I have heard that people's stuff has magically "disappeared" in the mail, or that people were told that their gold wasn't "real" or that they were only compensated for a percentage of what they sent in. Seems like a ridiculous scam to me. Just wondering if anyone knew of someone who did this or what their opinions were.

Dont know anyone thats done it, but I dont know why the hell anyone would trust someone to send em a check worth the actual value of the gold they sent.

It's a scam. Remember, anything that looks too good to be true probably is.

Already done. Ppl steal em off the spools before they can be put up, or steal em if they get knocked down in a storm. They even do the same with power lines. Its rediculous.

2 years ago someone cut all of the railings that went all around my school, in the parking lot, etc. It was weird getting there and all of the metal outside is gone.
