Saw this on Digg last night, it's a pretty stupid idea. Don't parents know how to teach their kids responsibility anymore?

yea i saw something about that... and lo-jack for teens or something that records driving speeds and shit.
I don't know I think "survival of the fittest" and "natural selection" don't mean anything anymore.

Also politically correct is a nice way of saying "im a p*ssy and wont say it to your face"

this could be the thing that saves YOUR life from being taken by an irresponsible teenage driver

teens are young and dumb, i know I did stupid shit in cars all the time, but i lived through it and never killed anyone

my parents wouldn't even let me drive my car with someone else in it because they were afraid it would be too much of a distraction and i'd get in an accident
then a few years later i read about a study that confirmed everything they said

I don't know if that's necessarily true...I've had more close calls with adults that weren't paying attention than kids. Just yesterday some idiot mom almost backed into me because she didn't look before backing up. And don't get me started on the people that think they have to stop to make a right-hand turn off of the road.

I think there should just be a lot more rigorous courses you have to pass before you get your driver's license, think mandatory evasive maneuvering courses. Run new driver's through an autocross course that has hazards pop up on the way through it. But god damn it's so fucking easy to pass the driver's test. A retard with no knowledge could pass it.

Speeding shouldn't be overlooked as being dangerous, but it shouldn't be the main concern, distracted driving is what kills, speed only kills if you don't know your limits. Also the punishment for intoxicated driving should be a lot stricter. I can personally think of a lot more worse things than going XX over the limit though.

    That's beside the point.

    Edit: Better?

lol, why fight me on this?
you think its healthy behavior for a teenager who just got their license to be able to go 90 mph?

as far as i know there is no device to tazer someone in the nuts when they aren't paying attention while driving, so i guess we'll have to settle for a speed limiter for now

Although speeding is bad I hardly ever see anyone speed 60+ on most streets. The highways are ... highways occasionally there is a speedy asshole and occasionally there isn't. Either way distractions are more dangerous (cell phones, makeup, food) stuff like that. I don't think a speed limiter is really going to be the fix for teen drivers having less accidents, the fix is: more rigorous training as stated before.
Plus teens are "invincible" in their minds and will always be somewhat reckless.

Why stop at limiting them to 80? Why not limit how fast they can get there? Stupid douche bags racing through school zones and packed neighborhoods kills ppl. Just limitng their top speed isnt gunna stop em from speeding in areas that need 100% of you attention. If car companies are gunna go this far, why dont they do something practicle and make acceleration limiters?

No, but you can charge people hefty fines for not paying attention to driving. I don't really care how fast a teenager is driving as long as it's a responsible speed for the occasion, sometimes that's 50mph others it can be 100mph. You can't tell me that a perfectly straight road with a mile plus of visibility and no other drivers on the road isn't safe for 100mph+. Rigorous driving training will instill better judgment in teen drivers. The only reason so many speeding tickets are given out are so the pigs have money to fund themselves.

Just south of my area, they're talking about putting speeding cameras in on the freeways. Speeding cameras that can be adjusted to keep the amount of tickets given out at a certain number. If people start only going 1 over the limit it can in theory be dialed back to give out tickets to people only going 1 over. Tell me that's about safety.

Well, yeah they do. However, did you listen to every damn word your parents did when growing up?

Teaching them to be responsible at 16-18 works, sure, but then the kids get out on the road and all hell breaks loose anyway.

I'd rather my son be limited on the radio volume and speed so he doesn't wrap the car around the center divider trying to see how fast he can go for the hell of it.

The reason it's limited as high as 80 is because it's universal as some states have speed limits of 75, I wish there was a way to limit speeds in school zones then take that limit off once a school zone is passed... but that would need human interaction to do it.

Regardless of this smart key and this new feature, kids are still going to be stupid and irresponsible, they're still going to get into accidents and do stupid shit. Thats when they realize they made the mistake and they won't be so stupid anymore. Yet a helping hand for parents to help avoid the mistakes suddenly makes them lazy, apparently.

Course not, but I managed to stay out of trouble. They taught me to make responsible choices, I knew where to draw the line at.

One of the main reasons driving kills so many teens percentage wise is well because what else do we have to die from? We're not old, we don't really have health problems.

I know a few teen drivers that are actually very responsible and better drivers than their parents, but I also know some that should not have licenses. If they're going to bother with the 80mph limiter, why not make it universal? Who needs to go over 80mph in this day and age? Why are cars made that have 300+hp when we're trying to increase the mpg? It's pretty sad when Ford is bragging about having tons of cars that get 26mpg or better. 26mpg is easily achievable. There's no reason cars shouldn't get at least 35mpg. Reducing the weight and all the excess crap in cars and reducing the size of the motor ought to do the trick. I can drive the crap outta my Civic and it'll still get 35mpg. All highway driving I can manage 41 mpg.

Im all about the tougher driving courses. Im not saying we need an autoban, but look the European driving standards. Why dont we implement some of their procedures over here. That would help big time.

If you cant handle the heat (driving distractions), get the hell outa the kitchen (any car).

2000Si was talking about limiting speed limits in school zones. I have a school zone out on the main road near my house. NO one every slows down for that. I'll be going for a bike ride with my little brother down that road and I'll have all sorts of different people speed past me doing at least 35mph WTF is up with that? It's not teen drivers that need their hands held, it's EVERYONE. I always go through school zones doing 20mph, it's just courtesy. What if a kid falls off their bike and lands right in front of you? If any of you on here are the type of assholes that speed through school zones, then fuck you. Also construction zones are limited for a reason, to keep rocks and other debris from hitting workers. I don't care if you speed in open empty roads, that's fine.

I already told you why it is being limited to 80. Some highways in the US have a speed limit of 75. Sometimes people just need to pass. Kids don't need to do 80+, ever. I drive through a school zone with a crossing guard every morning. EVERY morning. You have no idea how many people completely ignore the flashing yellow lights between 7 and 8:30 and 2 and 3:30... and I'm not talking about teenagers with that.

This key will limit kids from blaring music so they can't hear anything else around them and this key will limit kids from drag racing. If you want to call parents 'lazy' because they're taking this extra step with a vehicle that limits their kids, then you're obviously not a parent with a teen who's driving. All this is is another tool for parents to use to keep their kids and the road safe.

Honestly the only kids this will effect are the spoiled brats. Who can afford to buy their teen a new car? If it's a family car it'd work, but generally parents buy their kids some cheap pos, or let the kid buy themselves a cheap pos as their first car. If we're going to be talking about this, why not just make it mandatory to install a governor on all teens cars? It could be done for $200 per car I'm guessing.

    1) Word, that is so annoying.

    2) Too true. When I got my license I so thought that I bombed the driving test, then the instructor passed me. Easy.

    3) Yes! I have been trying to tell people that and nobody listens....

Next time you see a car accident, look in the top part of the wind shield, I bet you'll find some shit hanging in the mirror. Which btw I can't stand because it obstructs my view! and distracts me...
