You also have to bear in mind that may be in the minivan that they were making reference to the engine being put into. minivan = heavy.
That aside, its interesting to see honda using direct injection. I know a few mitsubishi engines were using it, but the ultra lean burn was pretty bad on emissions. It is interesting to see on the honda system that a high volume of exhaust gas is being recirculated. Though the 2 catalytic converters seem pretty specialized so I would hate to think of the replacement cost.
 
Its rediculous the amount of recirculation these new honda engines use. EGR is obviously above all, but honda is now recirculating and using gas tank fumes to aid in achieving perfect A/F ratios. Nothing that can me burned is going to waste, which is what is steadily giving honda its higher MPG ratings.

this is in a heavy non-aerodynamic minivan
