They only have problems when you have a way low car, they will slam the body toward the driver right in the middle of the tire.
My car is not lowered more than 2 inches, so its got clearance. Also, it depends what kind of tire your running.
All the guys I know running NASA, and all those fun road racing events have 225/50R15's and 16's on their CRX's and hatchbacks. I notice some of them have rub marks under the fenders, minorly.
Nothing a sledge hammer can't make more clearance for.
