last time i went to a credit union i was told i had to have an active account with them for like 6 months

Thats insane, I put 10k cash down on my car and anyone would finance me. I'm 20 and can't possibly have that much credit yet. I've been paying the credit card and cell phone for about 2 years, now i have an insurance and car payment but I couldn't have built that much credit that fast - although they did bump my limit on my credit card to 5k.

Don't know if your cell company is the same way, but the provider I have doesn't report credit unless you MISS a payment.

And here I've had a contract for 2 1/2 years with none of my timely payments counting for shit.
