I can't remember where I read it and I'm paraphrasing the results, but there was a study done that showed that higher-level navigation in humans is actually performed by the same areas of the brain as speech and audio processing. That's why you talk yourself through a set of directions, why music can make you miss turns, and why you turn down the radio when you get lost... You need your 'internal monologue' available and untasked to sort it out.
