So after some long thought and discussions with family and friends. I have decided In may-june this year to move from Dallas to Virginia beach.

I have never done this, or even been on a road trip for that matter. Im tired of feeling trapped and realize I could just go up there and find a job and live about the same standards as I do now, just somewhere else.

So the main purpose of this thread is like I have said, Ive barely been out of texas. What should I be prepared for? Or does anyone have any advice to lend a 22 year old thats about to leave it all behind and go?

and for those of you wondering, On of my bestfriends is moving up there in April, and that was kinda my spark.

    cheers.
    Spencer

Moved with my job to Chicago when I was 21. It's good to get out while you have nothing much tying you down. It kind of forces you to look at your life and get your priorities in order. And if you don't like it, you can always go back. I'm looking into moving to the Denver area in the near future. I've got that itch to leave again. Time seems right.

VA beach is very touristy. I visited it once as a kid probably 20 years ago with my parents on a family trip. It's pretty built up. The beaches are nice and white sand.

No idea what kind of work is there or the cost of living.

Echoing what others have said- you're young- open your mind and experience different areas and see what you like. Texas is awesome, but there's a LOT more out there to see. Go broaden your horizons and travel while you have nothing holding you down. Once you pick up a wife/kids and/or a solid career, things get a little more difficult to change.

Spencer...VA Beach is a nice area with lots of stuff to do in the area like go to Williamsburg and go to Busch Gardens, The Pottery Factory (huge factory outlet mall), and of course historic Williamsburg. just dont get freaked out when you have to go thru the Hampton Bay Bridge Tunnel as it goes under water...lol. its pretty nice out there and cool people as ive got some truck buddies out there in that area. good luck in the move!

Its not to chase a girl for sure! it might be the opposite. I cant find any good ones here so why stay :p

Its very reassuring to see all of you saying go!

Professionally I am a bar tender, and work in the service industry. So Im sure I could find a job SOMEWHERE there to get me buy. even if I have to downgrade restaurant quality.

but another factor driving me is the friend i'm moving with and I have a production company together and also play in a somewhat successful band here and Id hate to see it go to waste just because he and his wife are leaving.

thank you all for the motivation! I will return with more worries and questions as they come up.

The only thing I can think of to as opinions on is Im thinking I should just leave all my stuff here and basically just go with my cloths and guitars and rebuild from scratch.

any objections or concerns i should consider for that thought process?

Not a bad thought. Along the lines of what i did for Chicago and plan to do for Denver. Travel as lightly as you can since youre unsure if its what you want. If you decide its right for you you can reclaim the less imediately necessary belongings you left behind and may want out there later on. Or just toss whatever you decide you no longer want. Yet another thing moving kind of forces.

Just for the record, I hate Virginia. I'm here now. There are quite a few things around here to do as stated above. The beaches aren't the greatest and the water is green. There are a crap ton of military here which sucks because they all act like retarded assholes, they don't tip well and the cops hate everyone that is driving because of the military whether you are military or not because they can't tell from outside the car. Just tonight going to dinner I saw at least 8 cops that had different people pulled over. It gets freezing cold here like in the lower 10's and 20's but snows only once every 7 or so years and only like 2-3in at that but snows like 3-4 feet every year like 1-1/2 hours away in any direction. Vehicle inspections are retarded, how can you not pass my car because the headlights look a little foggy and a parking light that was just unplugged from the back? I haven't seen but a small hand full of modified cars and haven't seen or heard of any car meets in the 3 years that I've been here. The one junk yard that I've found that is a pick-n-pull type was 45 mins away and had crap for cars. /rant Anyways, good luck! :)

take what you can fit in your car and nothing more.

my only question is will you be staying with this married friend?
if so, that would be my only hesitation, nothing sucks worse than living with a married friend. it always becomes a hassle to everybody involved.
if you are planning to stay with them, do everybody a favor, and find a job and get your own place quick, the best friendships can turn sour real quick when the wife gets annoyed having another person living there.

just for the record, if you're at all politicially inclined, you're leaving the perhaps most free state, to a commonwealth. It's not even tecnically a state. expect significant tax increases in everything you do.

haha Thanks everyone! I appreciate all the advice and food for thought!

Im only crashing with the married friends for a week or two. I plan on having enough money saved up that its just gonna be a matter of finding an apartment and getting me a job somewhere.

all though Im scared about the cold :(

recked and J, Id love to find a job like that, but I don't think id love a job like that. so Im not sure its in my future :/

whatever you do, have as much fun as possible.

theres about a 90% chance that you will eventually end up right back where you are now, so have the fun thats out there. dont skip shit. lol.

meet people, and make new friends. that will be the longest lasting thing to come from moving like that.
i still keep in contact with some fl friends, i ended up back in tn a few years ago, but i now have free places to stay in fl and cali bc of it. and a cheap tattoo artist lol.
