The concept of variable valve timing was first created by GM . They were trying to use it to deal with new emissions laws since the SAE had came into fruition. There system was pretty primitive version of the system we now know as VVT (used external gears on the timing belt to change timing. However GM aborted the project(because they could not get it to worK at low lift) and in the next Giovanni Torazza, an engineer from Fiat created the Worlds first functional Variable valve timing system. However, Honda made this technology feasible for future use by creating a two phase system where low emissions and torque can be preserved , but still supply the high end power necessary for a street car to perform well in normal commuter task and still be a formidable vehicle in the racing curcuit thus defeating the purpose of using forced induction as a source of power fore low displacement engines. Because of the implementing of this technology in the 18989 CRX SiR, the ZC powered EF6 (The fully speced JDM D15A equivalent) and the 1.5 liter HOnda CIty Turbo and the Toyota 4A-GE were all deemed obsolete and began the beginning of the soon coming Japanese Super car war of the following decade.
