Im kicking around ideas for new/used cars and such, and was considering the commute that I'll most likely need to make when i graduate (got something lined up thats pretty secure), and it looks to be about a 30-40 minute commute, mainly highway. So, i was wondering...

What do you drive, and what is your avg mpg city, hwy, and combined?
What is your daily commute on (highways, city roads)?
How many miles is your daily commute?
How much is the avg gallon of gas where you are currently?
How much money do you spend, on average, a month on gas?

I only ask because im trying to weigh if it would be cost effective to buy a 2000 insight for like 8 grand and also buy a something in the 18-22k's (say used is300). Drive the insight to work only and the other car (probably getting 16-20 city mpg) around town, when i go out, or for fun drives. Or else buy someting like a 2001 m3 for 28k or a 2004 g35 coupe for 25k and call it a day.....Basically, something that gets max 20 highway and about 15/16 around town. Or last option (doubtful option) get a is300 and a bike :D. I am pretty high, sorry if my explanation sounds retarded  ^_^

If Im up to highway speeds I can get low 30s in my 350Z the G35 shouldnt be tooooo far behind that.

350Z AVG around 27mpg (mpg gauge)
    TL AVG 25-26mpg
CBR guessing around 30MPG if Im not having too much fun.

how much is my gasbill a month? I have no clue. let me add up my last creditcard statment.

First off, DAMN! I just noticed I spent $1000.00 in the last 10 days.

anywho added pu last month and I spent $147 Last month I cant remember fueling up the z or the bike. so add another $50.00 if I play with my toys

so 150-200 a month for gas.

    bout a 35-45 minute commute
either highway or city roads depending on whether i stayed at my place or at my girls place
average mpg is somewhere around 55 ish
i generally drive like an asshole
gas is around 3.28 right now for 89
i fill up about every 2 weeks sometimes 3 if i drive easy
costs me about 30-33 depending on how far i run the tank down
so im looking at somewhere around 60 a month i guess

its actually a pretty fun car to drive... perfect daily driver IMO
if you have some time to wait the smart car should be hitting sales floors next summer
those are supposed to be getting 45ish in the city and up to 75 on the highway
i may trade the insight for one of those

work from home. it owns :)

IMO, just keep your civic, and buy a nice car (is/m3/etc)

the cost to get an insight and gas savings VS just keeping the civic will probably take you 8 years to start making it cost-effective.

I have a 4 mile, each way commute. Driving only to work and home a tank of gas lasts me just short of 4 weeks. I actually know this now, since I've been driving ilegally for a month. (When I'm home we just take the woman's car)
It gets 35-40 mpg, 89 octane costs $3.11-$3.20.

The Vega gets about 25 mpg But the gas tank seam has split, so hard to tell.

I commute 66 miles a day, work 7 days a week, drive the subaru legacy 95% of the time, it gets 23-24mpg...prolly more if I slow down on the road...but I'm normally under 75 mph most of the time, all highway driving. LAte at night and early in gthe morning in the direction opposite the other commuters...so no traffic. I drive for 300 miles and fill up, since the fuel gauge reads too low, and it normally takes 13 gallons...it's a 14.5 gallon tank(i think)..and the gas price near my house is still in the $3.15ish area. Yesterday it took $42 to fill up.

And then there is the 260Z.... I've been driving it a little for commuting...and it fun....but sucks the gas. It was getting about 18mpg, but now it's around 14mpg...and it takes 93 octane...so the gas for that is $3.40ish right now. A fill up to make 3 days of commuting is about $50 with the 14 gallon tank, and the 4.11 LSD diff.....I got to set the tack to 3400 rpms in 5th gear to just keep up with the slow cars....and then 3700rpms to pass them... and since the diff is mismatched with the trany, the odometer read me at 90 mph for 55-60mph, 110mph for 70-75mph.... and the miles on the car is just going up like crazy...when I got the car it had about 73,596 miles on it...and now it's about to turn 90,000...in three years and the 3rd engine...hehe

    God I can't type sober.... :(

Throw that jeep away. Lincoln Navigators get that kind of gas use.

    Modded...

I get anywhere from 300-380miles/tank depending on what kind of driving I'm doing. If I'm boosting often, I'll be lucky to get 320 out of the car, but highway driving at 75-80mph I can do almost 400miles/tank. Its a 14.7 galloon tank.

    Works out to be about 20.5mpg if I get 300miles and 26mpg if I get 380miles - once I've gotten 27mpg by hitting 400miles/tank.

The cost to fill up, since its 93octane is around $50. I used to drive a ton to see the ex, but I haven't been driving that often so its not that bad. I'm also probably running pig rich until I get my protune done. Hopefully that will lean it out and I'll make some more power, with less fuel.

Well, this is what the trip computer reports, so with the 31" tires I put on there, at 13.3 mpg, I'm really getting roughly 14.9mpg.. But I have yet to tune it up since I purchased it, and the air filter is a little dirty, so with a tune up and a K&N I expect to be pulling roughly 16-18mpg. Maybe better.

Yup, even running perfectly its a fat pig. But I can smash things with it, run over pretty much whatever I want, and people actually move out of my way now. That, and its cushy and has kick ass A/C. So I don't much care about the gas mileage. The only thing that bothers me is that I'm always at the gas station now, lol.

86 Accord, modified enough. I can drive about 400 - 450 miles on average per tank of gas (15 gallon capacity). $3.09 on average for a gallon of gas and I can usually eat it all up in about two weeks.

    hmmm ideas are churning....

Keep civic, buy insight and a bike?
    Keep civic, buy insight?
    Keep civic, buy bike?
Ditch civic, buy bike, buy used IS?
    Ditch civic, buy used IS?

Reason why i dont want to drive the civic everywhere is because I just dont want to bring that image with me to work (punk new kid who still drives his rice burner car).

If i end up buying an insight (loan), buying a bike full out, and getting a loan to spruce up the civic, then id be well within my budget, be out of civic payments in 1.5-2 years and insight payments in 3. i wont be chained down to a new car with a 5 year loan when things can change drastically (lose job, change of jobs, move) in 5 years and possibly be forced to sell prematurely.. Also, i need to consider insurance for all three, which i have done on progressives site to give me a ball park figure... Plus, when the civic loan is done in 18-24 months, thats another 200 a month that will go back into my pocket (not literally, but i wont have to spend it on a loan payment). On top of that, insurance for the insight will go down once id fully own it...

Im leaning towards the trifecta, because with my earnings ill still be able to save quite a bit of change each month, because who wants to spend every last penny on cars, rent, food etc with no money to buy nice things like TV's, furniture, or put towards savings? I guess i just talked myself out of a new/used car lol

or does all this stuff im spewing sound rediculous? :D

Last option- buy used IS if you want an image car, buy the bike for economy.

remember the cost effectiveness of the insight could change drastically if gas goes to 4 or 5 bucks a gallon

    and what sort of bike?
600+ bikes are really really bad on gas...

exactly, and you can find them cheap.

600cc sport bike, but it would never be used on teh trip to/from work. Maybe into boston or providence, once in a while... and thats only when its late spring/summer/early fall.

hmmm now how can i spruce up my car.... i mean if im going to keep it, might as well make it somewhat entertaining.

My 05 R6 got around 40mpg, my 91 cbr got 55ish mpg, highway driving.
My integra gets around 30mpg on the highway. That's the best I've gotten since the engine build. I could lean it out a bit more at cruise, and probably be okay, but I'm fine with 300 miles/ fillup. Granted, I drive 600 miles per week on average. With premium gas prices, I pay about $60-70 per week on gas. I need a job closer to home.

Not if you aren't goosing it at every possible moment...:(
