Hey whatsup. Allright so I’m almost 16 years old and I’m getting my dads old car, a 99 civic ex sedan,,,, automatic(ha). Yeah I know, its not exactly the coolest car and to say the least the auto SOHC y8 isn’t doing it for me and I don’t have the money or time to do a manual conversion. I know that most of you are going to say “sell it and buy a manual†but I’m stuck with the car. I want something with a little more power, DOHC, vtec, high compression, n/a, automatic;

Lsvtec
B20vtec
h22
etcetera…

I want to do this so please don’t just tell me how stupid this idea is and how I shouldn’t waste my money. I just need some help on picking an engine. Feel free to give me your opinion.

Thanks Honda gurus!!

ive heard that auto to manual swaps arent that difficult.
in fact, an engine swap should be harder and more expensive.

your going to have to do the manual swap anyway if you go with a b-series. You should do. the manual swap first and get a cheap SOHC tranny. then you'll see a big difference in the y8. Thats and the z6's are some nice stronf motors.

THEN save up for complete swap in the future. your just going to be back tracking by putting a sorry ls tranny or something with horrible gearing and then have to tear it back out because you badass engine is slow as balls or it bounces off the rev limitor due to the shift points.

if its an ls i dont want to hear it. If it's a vtec b-series tell me how it shifts when you put the pedal down.

i have beeni a car with a b20 vtec motor mated to a B16 manual tranny. It sucks.

i can only imagine it gettng worse......

i remebered it was a b20vtec. my bad

I've got my B20 mated to a B16 tranny. I like it. Lots.

To the OP--Do you have experience turning a wrench? How much money are you spending on this project? Can you have idle time with your car? What are you going to do with the car?

Anyone can slap a motor in a car and make it work--just make sure that it's all going to serve a purpose and you aren't wasting time and money by doing it right the first time.

dont you worry about over revving with the short gears in a not so revving motor? thats the problem my buddy had with his civic

if you are just turning 16, learn how to drive first. you don't need something that will send you into a wall.

it's like guys who want motorcycles, i always tell them to start with a 250. you dont' need a 1000cc bike your first time out.

No. It stops making power at about 5800. It is a little low, but honestly, even though it goes through the gears pretty quick, the torque is fun to play with. It starts making power right at the 3500 mark, and will pull all the way to 5800-6000. That's a longer power band than most of the other Hondas I have driven--at least one that you can feel. I can mash it about 4500-5000 and feel the front end get loose.

I've considered getting an LS tranny, but I like the pep of the B16. I don't race the car, and I don't autox. So for just going around town, it's fun. People don't expect it, either. The highway is a different story. Spinning 4k doing the speed limit sucks, but oh well.
