math help

please tell me i'm not retarded.... it seems it costs more to buy in bulk, which simply doesn't make sense.

(pellets)

$255 per ton
$325 per skid (1.3 tons)

Bags are 40 lbs each


1 ton = 2000 lbs = 50 bags
1.3 ton = 2600 lbs = 62 bags (600/50 = 12 bags in the .3)

255/50 - $5.10 /bag
325/62 = $5.24 /bag


It costs more to buy in bulk. Makes no sense. I did the math correctly, no?

This is correct, and I believe their marketing scheme is that if you need the larger amount, but don't want to pay the larger price for them, then perhaps you'll buy just an extra ton (assuming you'll be able to use it before it expires), thus increasing consumer demand, allowing for a higher price to be charged.

I think they altered one price and forgot to move the other.

These ship as skids at 62 bags, so if you only want 1 ton, they have to pick 12 bags off the stack. makes no sense in their favor either, marketing or not.

Buy 1 for $3 buy a $3 pack for $9,49

Better yet, 12oz box of something $2.99 16oz box for $4.29

Bigger is better and you should never think twice about it.

your math is wrong
1 bag = 40 lbs
1.3 tons = 2600 lbs = 65 bags

so its 5.10 per bag(ton) vs 5.00 per bag on the skid
so its cheaper to buy the skid, as compared to the ton

which one are you considering to be bulk?
the per ton, or the per bag skid?

i would assume you get a discounted price on a skid, as opposed to selling them per bag

is the ton delivered to your house, vs the skid at the store?
because that would make a difference whether its worth 6.50 for you to pick up and move 40 bags

this is all pick up price. delivery isn't included. I already lugged home 1 ton last week. Looking to secure the 2nd 1/3 while prices are still relatively low.

good catch on the math. i should have divided by 40, not 50.

so how many tons do you use a winter?
and do you also run oil?

i use just under a full 3 tons and about 1-2 tanks of oil (275 gallon tank) even though they come in 100-gallon spurts every couple months for auto-fill (my hot water heater is on the furnace, boiler, so it still runs, and my stove is on my main level of the split-level house, so the lower story gets no heat.... and thats my tv room. So, i do still run that room up a bit when i'm in it, otherwise, its kept at 55.

I did all the math once based on my first year of living here before i put the pellet stove in.
so long as heating oil is above $2.23 a gallon, it is cheaper to burn pellets.
That didn't factor in the cost of the stove, which over time will pay for itself. Frankly, i'm probably even already or will be soon this season.
It uses about $10 in a power a month run 24/7.
oil is currently 2.70 around here, and seems to keep going up, so i'm making 'profit' by over 50 cents.

Now, with the oil, it was rarely over 62 in my house so i was being very cheap. This is back when oil was 4.50-$5 a gallon
With the stove, it stays upper 60s to low 70s.

So, i'm saving money, having a warmer home, buring a 'carbon neutral' product (pellets are all waste product) and best of all, i'm supporting American/Canadian wood workers/flooring makers/cabinet makers instead of terrorist arabs and the black blood that sucks our politicians to shit.
