Interesting Ethical Debate

They're doing this because they think a 1 foot difference will make it easier on them?? Sooooo they basically want to take the easiest route here in caring for their child. "Oh we're doing it so she wont have bed sores" ummm fuck face, anyone in bed for a prolong period of time will get bed sores..


these parents are pussies.

On an ethical level, I think its wrong because of the reasoning behind it.
 
she is basically a pile of flesh and will never be anything more. in a perfect world she would have died at birth. but who makes the decision to take her out of her misery.

and people say there is a god....
 
carrying around a full size adult is obviously much more difficult than a 65 lber.... but its still not a 10lb infant either....

i don't agree with it, but who am I to say...

the fact that the parents are even raising her says a lot about them, and I support any decision they make for their daughter, so long as it is in good intentions for the ease or better of care given to her. If keeping her a little smaller helps that, and there's not really any side effects to the hormone, grab me a rubber band and tap up a vien.
 
she isnt even a girl anymore... she wont develop boobs, she takes hormone pills, and she has no uterus...

how does 1 foot and 50lbs make it easier for them to include her at meal time, car trips, or closeness?? I just dont get it...
 
The ancient greeks used to take defunct children and abandon them in the mountains.

Same principle. Would you abort a baby because it's defective ?

it's an interesting situation, from what I've read the surgery will make her body match her mind. IF it does not cause undo pain to the child and IF it does not effect their quality of life then I say why not?

ok here we go for debates sake:

Go find a 2x6 54 inches long and strap lets say 75 pounds to it and try to pick it up. Next take that same board add a foot and 25 more pounds to it. I don't know you from Adam but I am sure that you could probably achieve both tasks if needed. No matter what the arguement is the shorter board with less weight would be easier to move regardless how easily you could move both of them. Less weight = less effort = easier.

Now with that in mind imagine moving this lets say 10 times a day minimum. I am sure that if you had the means you would probably choose if you could to only lift the lighter of the two loads all the time.

I know that I am really over simplifying the example and turning this poor little girl into an inanimate object but it does prove a point. Most of us would make it easier on ourselves if given the chance. To take it a step further if the treatment they chose to have done to their daughter makes it easier for them to include her in thier every day activities then I would hope that her life would be that much more fulfilling to whatever extent that would be.

My Fiance is a special ed assistant and she has had to move children like the one in the story. With that said I have seen what it can do to a person after only one day - sore back, achey joints, etc. I cannot imagine what it could do to someone after a life time. I guess I commend the parents for taking steps to enable them and their family to interact with their daughter more as opposed to locking her away in an institution.

Just my .02 I wasn't even going to comment.....
 
Now nine years old, Ashley cannot keep her head up, roll or change her sleeping position, hold a toy, or sit up by herself, let alone walk or talk. She is tube fed and depends on her caregivers in every way. We call her our “Pillow Angel” since she is so sweet and stays right where we place her—usually on a pillow.

No shit she stays where you put her...

I didnt know she couldnt walk, talk, roll over, play dead (well..), fetch, or even hold her head up. I thought she could walk maybe with the aid of those pole thingees that wrap around their arms or be able to use a wheelchair, guess not. But they could have gotten a wheel chair like contraption for her that will keep her head up too. its not like there was nothing in the world that could help her out. Whats wrong with putting her in a chair? What do i know, its the 21st century.. surgery is the answer for everything.
 
^^^^^Its not that easy.....I am sure that her doctors have explored every possible remedy to help her. Do you honestly think that they chose surgery as a first option. I am willing to bet that every other idea was exhausted before they risked surgery.
 
put her in a wheelchair with a potty pan...and she will be set...

i dont believe interfering with anyone's natural growth is ethical...even if it makes her easier to move around...this is about ethics and i believe its not the right thing to do...if its such a burden on you to pick up and move around an extra 50 pounds...then put her at a good medical facility where people specialize in that kind of care.
 
Jeremy's parents handle his autism incorrectly. My friend has an autistic child (Who is 14 now, and getting that strong). He is very well behaved. He screams when there are too many people talking to him, or if his favorite shows are on and he's not watching them. But mostly he learns and tries one new thing a year, and you can't make him stop. When he was 10 his parents got into shape because he rode a bicycle (And wouldn't stop). His case is severe too.
