alternator problems

today after driving around for a wile...and heard a whistle comming from under the hood.so l decided to take a look....i noticed that my alternator cable (that power comes from)was glowing..i decided to drive home and on the way my lights were realy dim and my car about died...wile the car is running i get 12 v at the battery and 14 at the alternator...when its running i should get the same right?

wtf is up??

Yes, while the car is running you should get 14v at the battery. While it is off you should get 12v at the battery. I would check connection and most likely replace the alternator.
