I'm new to the forums, but have been trolling many for the past few days about teg motor swaps.
I'd been driving a slightly modded Talon TSi for the past few years until it was stolen. Then just happened to pick up a 98 RS teg that was in good shape. But I've always been disappointed in how slow it is.
Unfortunately my timing belt just recently broke on it. Was going approximately 30-35mph, with it floored because i was merging onto a highway when it broke. Haven't been able to get it apart to find out what the extent of the damage is yet. Knowing my luck with cars, it'll be bad.
Either way I figured this might be a good opportunity to fix the issue and get more performance that I've been seeking. With economic times being as they are. I really don't want to jump in over my head on cost. I'd like to keep it very reasonable.
I've come across fairly inexpensive, lower mileage H22As with ECU and transmission for sale in my area. I understand the axle's need to be changed, and I'll lose my A/C. Just haven't done enough research I guess yet, to know what other costs would be involved on this swap.
My other obvious choice would be the B18C1 motor. This seems to be a much better option, being that it basically drops right in. My only concern here is that the affordable US version of this motor is still only 170HP to my understanding... While the H22A is 200(Please correct me if I'm wrong). But it seems like the extra work for better torque and 30 more HP might be worth the time, assuming the cost isn't ridiculous. I've never driven or ridden in a GSR, so I don't personally know how much quicker they are.
I've gotta make a decision either way pretty quickly, as the RS is my daily driver, and I'm stuck borrowing a gracious friends toy for the time being.
So I was hoping to get any possible feedback or suggestions from folks who have done one or both of these swaps. Pro's and con's. Extra costs involved(other than obvious parts =).
