cant get timing right!!!!

hey guys i installed new cams in a b16 and i cant get my timing right... i set the crank to tdc and my cams are also lined up the notches in the teeth and red marks on top but when i started it it poped like a back fire.. so i pulled off the distributor to check that the rotor was pointing at the #1 point but its not even close, its pointing at the #2... can someone shed some light on this for me thanks

sounds like you are using the wrong mark on the crank pulley for Top Dead Center - the TDC mark is the one that is off to the right of the 3 ignition timing marks
