How the fuck can a basket ball coach make 10-20 times more than the friggen Governor of the fucking state..... that just makes my fucking blood boil.

According to this SI article: Why Jim Calhoun's $1.6 million annual salary is not unreasonable - Andy Staples - SI.com

They estimate that under Calhoun for 07-08 he turned a net profit for the athletic department to the tune of 10 million after his salary was paid and after other expenses were taken out. That is 10 million less that the state had to supplement for the university.

I don't live in your state but how much of a profit did your Gov. turn for the state? I know it is apples to oranges but I bring up this point to show that it is two totally different positions.

explain to me again why my tax dollars should go to a basketball coach for a college team and make a profit for the college and not money for the state? I'm not in college, I don't like Basketball, and I'm already paying taxes on a car that I bought and paid taxes on.... again. I had to pay and I'm still paying my own college loans, why should I pay for others to go to college.

These damn taxes are getting way too much out of hand and pocket.

Taxes for our protection...I can handle that. That's how I get paid. War needs military, military needs helicopters, helicopter maker needs mechanics...then I pay it right back to the govn.

I don't feel like scrounging for figures to crunch for Governor vs Basket ball coach... but I'm sure running a state is more important that making sure a team of steroid popping jocks win a damn sports game.

And if his fans says that he got 26 million dollars to the college....whooptido.

And what I work on all night is a $15-30mil helicopter that I help build...and about 2-3 of them a month....for the military for medivac operations... other sections all together producing about 160+ helicopters a year....then I should be making more than $1.6 million dollars a year.???? I'll be lucky to make $100K's this year.

Ya. People aren't going to fill a stadium and pay $15 a piece to be there to watch the Governor give a speech.

100k for a labor based job really aint all that bad. Especially if you don't own the company.....if i could find that in dallas i dont think there's much else i'd need.

Any profit he makes for the university is LESS tax money the residents of the state have to pay, as it is a state funded school.

if my house, cars, and toys were all paid off...and we had free healthcare...restaurants took food stamps.... etc....

I'd jump into un-employment feet first....but $20K's really doesn't go very far these days...

On the good news, next month I'll break back into the $199,000's for my total debt.... down from $228,000 from last Jan. :)

or look at the other jobs.

20k doesn't get you very far in Meriden, any part of Connecticut, or really any part of the Northeast for that matter, however, that is a liveable amount of money for most of the middle of the country. I went to grad school in a place where you could rent an entire furnished three bedroom house for $400/month. This would explain my theory that the hardest workers and the highest concentration of intelligence can be found in the Northeast. It is cold and expensive and welfare/unemployment just doesn't fly in so many places. There is heavy incentive to WORK because wages and potential earnings are higher, coupled with the fact that $22,000 is not enough to pay rent, make car payment(s) and buy food.

Ok so lets flip the angle on this - Lets say that Uconn was horrid at every sport they played and didn't gorss 10-15 million dollars due to their sports teams. That would mean that much more deficit that your taxes would have to cover. I guess I just don't see the reasoning behind your argument. He is saving you money by coaching this team. If he were to be paid the same amount and have a terrible team I could see the gripe but not in this case. Also think of all the un mentioned money Uconn brings in.

- Room tax for people coming to games that stay in hotels
-Dollars spent locally in the vacinity of where they play
-Sales tax
-Not to mention that Uconn and the conference get kick backs for tv and tourney appearances.

Yes and then you have licensing and merchandising agreements, successful schools being more profitable. It is a total win. He is being paid what he is worth

And why not pay toward someone else's school with your tax dollars. You are boosting the intelligence quotient of the area you live in which will in turn lead more successful people to live in the area, upgrade their homes, pump money into local elementary schools, jack the property value...oh, that's right, this is already happening or has happened in most of Connecticut.

I'd love to see how getting a higher education turned into how many points you scored at a game, and how many cell phone commercials you can be in....? What happened to going to college to get a degree?

college is for smarts and games are games.... It just makes me sick that baseball/basketball players make more than the guys that are finding cures for cancer.

I'd pay more taxes and have a good feeling about it if I knew it was funding someone better than a fucking ball player or a damn coach for that ball player.... Uconn also has science and medical stuff... but I'm really sure that 12 million dollars will go far in trying to find a cure for something.... 12 mil is a drop in the bucket...a huge bucket.

<--- not a sports guy, and the more hype and money I see tossed at sports make me sick.

The problem you are talking about with sports is solely brought on by the general public accepting that these practices as ok. "What? $90.00 to go to a pro football game - ok I'll take four."

If the consumer would stop handing out gobs of money to go see professional sports the prices/salaries would go down. You could do the same with college sports but the problem is more complicated- leading to the salaries going down - leading to athletic departments to cutback or cut sports programs which would lead to less scholarships which would lead to less meaningful graduates (most scholarship players do not go to the pros) which would lead to less revenue which wold lead to more tax burder for tax payers.

I don't want to put words in your mouth but to me it looks like you are trying to combine money paid/spent on pro sports with college athletics. From my point of view it doesn't work.

The moral is that the money generated for the school by sports, saves the taxpayers money and goes to other parts of the school that most assuredly have to do with education. If that was not the case, all the earnings from athletics would be pumped right back into athletics and they would have an enormous stadium, all the seats would be in jacuzzis, you would get a free watch or sunglasses with every ticket purchase and the players would be dressed in uniforms made of diamonds

If my comments were unclear, I agree with you wholeheartedly.

Show me one example how paying for a sport is saving me tax money...please...in black and white....a link if you have one. Prove me wrong. Everything is taxed. We already have taxes on taxes...to pay for taxes on the taxed. (I wrote that here first, pay a $0.005 fee to use that as a quote on another forum, paypal airjockie 2002 @yahoo.com for each post used)

now back to un-employment...... low lifer's better get a job...ASAP. (this is also payable to airjockie2002 @ yahoo.com at $0.0003 per use as a quote)

(note...delete spaces in email addy for payment to paypal, I'm currently applying for executive(ly) transport(ive) clearance(ances) at work..... and I don't want a trace back to this post)

hint hint...;)

That's great in theory, but next to impossible to do. At 15% here, you're talking about 1.5 million people. How do you check on that many people. Technically the sytem requires you to look for work, but even if you had to list where you were applying, how can it be verified?

All you have to do is pick up a phone and call to certify for your benefits every 2 weeks, and it's an automated system.

oh look at this, sounds like we could create jobs just by checking on those who submit for unemployment!

That's why I like the idea of a la carte taxes:

"Ok citizen, your taxes for the year amount to X dollars. Here is a generalized list of things you can apply your share toward. Pick what amount is devoted to what."

Airjockie can devote the bulk of his taxes to Science and Research, the soccer mom down the street can fund the sports related stuff, military folks will put money into defense spending, etc. Non-important or unpopular projects would be starved of funds due to the market. Congress can then subdivide available funding as they see fit.

Sounds like a great idea. We could actually create more gov't jobs to supervise people on the gov't payroll.

I think we need a czar for this.
