crx b16a1 conversion

hi i just got my first honda its a 1988 crx with a b16a1 redtop i got a check engine light come on and vtec seems to not be engaging cars running fine no knocks splutters or anything like that . just no vtec any ideas

sorry if this has come up a million times i have checked through the forum but couldnt find an exact answer to my problem

oh also i have vtec befor the ecl comes on but asoon as it does vtec dosnt work
