Well, I'd really like to start using linux again.
I used to use Redhat, had a copy of mandrake.

I like the look of Suse but I don't want to pay to download it and they don't seem to have an ISO avaliable anymore, only an ftp install.

so what's a good distro that's floating around these days, anyone use fedora or slackware ??

just looking for some help as I have been out of the loop for some time now.

Mandrake 10 Community was just made publicly available yesterday, and the stable ISO should be out in May... Try that, I'll be upgrading to 10.0 Community when I get home. :)

that said, i gave up and am back on xp :(

Wuss! :D At least dual boot for a while maybe.

naw, my system is just too old... its new parts, but a lot of my hardware is from 97. couldnt get any drivers/etc for it

Ouch. That sucks. Old parts should be have tons of drivers out there though- aren't they typically more developed as time goes by? Lots of the Linux guys out there like to run secondary machines on older hardware...

Slackware is pretty good, we have it on the machines in our computer lab (I believe it is also running our Beowulf cluster). I am running Free BSD (not Linux I know, but solid non the less). I have also had reasonable luck with Debian.

I ran Debian for a while, when I had a Wintel Machine, it was good did everything I needed it to do, and I really never had any real problems with it other than some minor hardware support. It would not recognize my modem, but it did not matter, because the modem was not being used and it recognized my network card, so all was good.
