There aren't any springs...it's got what I guess you'd call 'opposing' cam lobes...

The theory with desmo valves is that you don't get valve float at high rpm. Depending on the piston clearance, valve float can result in the valves touching the pistons usually with fairly catastrophic results. The other benefit is less loading of the valve train with correspondingly less power loss (every bit counts when your racing) See the link for Ducatis explanation
