It's really sad that one of the 'best' vehicle companies of the 70s-00s is a year away from no longer existing.

The article cites cheap EVs coming out of China.

I say, no. Nissan, you created finance plans that catered to those who can't afford the car in the first place. Thus, associating the cars/brand/image/ with a class for those who have money to put their money in other brands. Plus, Insurance is through the roof. No one is buying a 50k brand new Altima because there's no resale. No one wants the used Altima.

We had high hopes for the new Z. It's not all that, and it's too pricey for basically anyone who wants it. This needed to be WRX-comptitive price wise, and it's STI-price wise.
The nismo - forget about it.

Killing off the GTR? why? it was the only anchor your brand had left. It needed a facelift and a new drive line, that's all.

Killing the Titan? It didn't compete because it was a pile of crap. Quality killed this one.

Pro-4x line -- it had potential. But it was clear you were always chasing the Tacoma instead of innovating. And the aftermarket didn't support it.


If you want to turn the line around,

Fix the brand image in the US. Kia's are more respected.
Stop wasting time with China. There's no profit there.
Reduce your offerings. Too much variety and too much crap without QC making them good cars.
Increase your warranty to be competitive.
 
yeah, looks like Nissan and Honda are going ot join forces on an EV program to compete with China.

I don't see how it helps. There's not enough cost-cutting available to compete with $5 disposable china tin cans.

It reminds me of the late 80s when DSM formed, and they built a handful of cars before disbanding back into their own brands.

What they all should do instead is focus on markets where there actualy is money and make a car that people want to buy.

I think i speak for most of us when i say, Honda hasn't made a car I want to buy since 2001.
Nissan did, but they priced me, and most others, out of it.
 
I've had fleeting interest in some of Honda's output over the years...the Fit, 9th-gen Si, CTR, TLX, etc. But yeah, nothing so appealing to where I seriously considered pulling the trigger.

You're right about still not being able to compete with China cost wise, but I kind of get it. Governments are pushing all of them towards EV whether they like it or not. Even if they can't do it as cheaply as China can, they still probably want to do whatever they can to bring R&D costs down.

I just hope that in the end, this deal is essentially Honda absorbing Nissan and redirecting their assets and knowledge towards building EV's specifically versus a mixing of the two brands. Honda ain't what it used to be, but I'd still prefer to not see them diluted by something else.
 
They've both had really solid engineering for quite some time. I just wonder how Nissan's net revenue tanked so badly in just one year. I'm good with the merger to keep Nissan alive. Maybe they can put some of that transmission over-engineering into Honda's stuff. Not that anyone's buying manuals anymore, or swapping engines left and right like the good old B series days. :(
 
I'm still at the Big H, and I really do not know what the company has to gain from this aside from additional manufacturing capacity. My personal suspicion is that it is a strong voluntold request from the Emperor to save face (and jobs) back in the motherland.
