So I ubuntu didn't work well for me for whatever reason. So I came across a linux mint distro. Basically an even more simplified ubuntu. Good for someone like me who knows almost next to nothing about it.
It installs like ubuntu but enables all the extras. The codecs were installed, came with envy (just had to run the installer). It allowed me to run the restricted drivers for my nvidia card. After a little fighting I got all the desktop effects working with emerald.
For some reason too the internet runs alot faster, ubuntu was slow. The only thing that won't work is filesharing with windows. Shows the workgroups, but no computers under them, and I think samba is working.
Basically a whole lot less fighting with it, I'd say about 80% of the way to windows easiness.
