Well, the time is almost upon us, and the nice cars are becoming less and less common on the roads. It's kind of funny, but you can actually see the drop in nice cars an increase in shitmobiles around this time of year. I thought about driving the AllTrac this winter, but shit always happens in the snow, and I don't want shit to happen to the AllTrac. That, and I hear Teins don't take too kindly to salt. So, I've kind of had my ear to the ground for the past six months or so... everything from Metros to Corolla AllTracs to Geo Prisms... then I came across my $100 dreamcar. Well, not really, since I don't take it too seriously, but hey, $100, what do you want? So the story behind it is this- a couple from GA came up here to VT for the Phish show (shudder) back in August. It's an automatic, and their kickdown cable froze. They thought they blew the tranny, but in reality, the transmission was thinking they were driving around at WOT and was being prevented from shifting out of first. So they abandoned the vehicle at where I work. I inquired about it, and was told $100. I spent about an hour freeing up the kickdown cable, and that fixed it. It has new brakes, tires, alternator, starter, fresh fluids, and being from GA, it has no rust to speak of. It has 231K miles, and other than worn front shocks, drives like new and is VERY comfortable and relaxing to drive. What is it? An '85 Toyota Vanwagon Conversion. It started life as a cargo van, but was turned into a conversion van. It has rear AC and heat (both work, too!), and the rear most seat folds down into a bed! Yes, it's a shitpile, but it's probably the best $100 I ever spent. Pics will ensue when I get around to it. It'll be available for public viewing in a few weeks in CT.
I'm every father of a teenage girl's worst nightmare- a guy that drives a van with a bed in the back.
