Wow, 2012 could prove to be the end of the world....

Anyway, an 8.9 quake just hit off the coast of eastern japan 2:30PM standard (10:32PM pacific). In comparison, the one that hit Haiti last year was 7.0. Hopefully, all of Japan's prep pays off and no major lost of life or anything occurs.

Massive 8.9-magnitude quake hits Japan - CNN.com

In addition, a 6.3 and 7.2 rocked Honshu just a couple days ago and yesterday, respectively...

this is 1000 stronger than the one that hit haiti last year... so if this occurred in, say the phillipines,or some other non 1st world country, it could be disastrous.

its still pretty early, so we dont know what the implications are, but if damage is extensive enough, could halt quite a bit of goods from Japan.

They are something like 8-10 miles under the surface so they aren't producing Tsunami's or much damage where they are going off though.. The 8.6 was too deep for the equipment to measure its depth according to earthquake.usgs.gov

Huh, there wasn't even anything issued on the national Tsunami warning center... So much for relying on that website lol.

EDIT: Wow I guess I didn't know all the facts before posting, looks like there is a tsunami warning out for New Zealand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, and I'm sure some of the west coast might get some waves too.

Germany - Chancellor Angela Merkel offered help to Japan and expressed her sympathies to the families of the victims. In an official statement she wrote, "Be assured that in these tragic hours, Germany stands at Japan's side, and is ready to help"

Italy - Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi stated "We are close to the Japanese people in this tragic circumstance and ready to give all possible help and assistance to the government.

Maybe we should send them some aid too...

8.9 is a fucking HUGE quake.

I'm ok on the west coast. :)

I think watching the people’s reactions shows how serious it was over there. From what I can tell Japan gets hit pretty often not that earthquakes and such aren’t scary but it is part of life but seeing folks reacting the way they are in some of these videos give me the sense that this wasn’t an average event.

A co-worker of mine has a brother that lives over there. He was able to communicate via email that he was fine, but that his cell was about to die. Power is out, no communications, etc.

clean water is going to be a huge problem I would imagine.

He made it sound like the locals have no idea what the scale of the whole thing is without getting information from the outside world.

I would say potable water and food supply will be the biggest things off the bat. Obviously medical care as well.

Wow, this tsunami actually did some damage to the santa cruz inlet piers! Crazy this quake made a tsunami to do damage here in the bay area!

Most of our computer systems are down at work. Production is halted at many factories. At the main R&D facility in Japan, ~150 miles from epicenter, one person died and a bunch are injured when a wall collapsed.
