Watanabe Whore!!!
Rest In Peace
On New years eve, I spent some time with the wife's friends and such...and one of them was a person with a lot of degree's... And me, being the cocky fellow that I am...I asked him if he could explain to me how a bumble bee can fly...just to see if he knew his stuff... Well, my long night of drunken stuper came to a hastily end with me getting so sick I couldn't stand up... a damn flu... but what we talked about all night brought some light into the realism's of hard-core physics. Steve would have shit his pants on what we was talking about...maybe later I might throw an "All Brains Meet with Beer" one of these nights... and get some hardcore thoughts going again...

Well, the night ended, and it intrigued the wife so much that she now is on this science kick and she wants to learn more. She's already bought books on the big bang, black holes, and time travel...

and one of the things that she's been talking about is the possibilities that this one CERN machine might do...

CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research

in a few months it looks like it will fire up...and we all are wondering what will happen...

So what are your thoughts?

a. how can a bumble bee fly?
b. Can we make a black hole in a lab?
c. Is time travel possible?
d. and add any other thoughts in a related matter.

i love your wife. she is so freakin smart. dude, i would love to go to one of those parties.

i don't post on here that much i lurk lol ill try to change that. but i had to jump in on this...

i think time travel is not possible.... because if you think about it. if you go back in time.. wouldn't we already have encountered people who had come back?

so there would already be a sighting or someone messing with the timeline.... so if someone went back in time and messed something up we would be living the messed up time line all along.
the only person to feel the change would be the person who went back.
and don't you think if it were possible. someone would have the decency to change some big devastating events of our time or even before us? like lets just say 9/11?

idk its a tricky subject but thats my take on it. i think if it were possible we would already know about it.

a. same as any other insect. moves its wings back and forth to thrust itself.

b. scientists are working on making microscopic black holes in labs. i dont know if they have been successful yet, but i remember seeing a documentary about it. i think they said they are very unstable and disappear almost as soon as they appear.

c. time travel IS possible. but only forward IMO. and only in a relative sense. time can actually move at different speeds depending on how fast you are moving and how close you are to a gravitational feild. time moves slower the faster you go. this has been proven, they did an experiment with 2 synchronized atomic clocks, sent one into space and let it orbit the earth for a while and when they brought it back the clocks were off from each other.

so in theory say you traveled at the speed of light to somewhere out in space say 5 light years away, then came back. you would have aged 10 years, but everyone else here on earth would have aged maybe like 100 or 1000 years (guessing, i dont know the exact difference in those circumstances), so technically you just traveled to the future. but you are taking yourself out of the equation. you cant just zap yourself to the future to see what your life will be like or anything like that.

my .02. i dont know if the bumble bee question was serious though. arent you into aerodynamics and airplanes?

c. Is time travel possible?
d. and add any other thoughts in a related matter.

a. Wings push against air, air pushes back, flight.

b. Not my business or concern.

c. Nope, and if you think so you're an idiot. Those clocks that went into orbit don't mean a damn thing because they've probably been through magnetic fields that fucked with the batteries and so the time wouldn't match. Oh also, if you traveled 5 lightyears away and 5 back at the speed of light, it would be 10 years either way, you were just traveling super fast. Nothing changes, Earth would still be 10 years aged as well. LOL.

d. People (especially scientists) need to stop wasting so much time trying to figure out the unknown because they will just be let down when they come to the realization that time travel is a dumbass idea and impossible. Just because you move at the speed of light only means it took much less time to get somewhere. That's it. There's no funky relationship between space, stars, and our lives it's just huge and amazing, nothing more. Scientists should stop wasting so much time and money in dumbass research like this and invent more ways to make life better.

Just my thoughts.

It's fascinating stuff.

My first year at UCLA I took an astronomy class that I would have paid to attend even if it offered me no credit and was held on a Friday night.

Although the explanations were ultimately way over my head, so I couldn't really judge the validity, one professor said traveling back in time was possible, not forward though.

dont know if we can make a black hole,,but the hole will answer a life long question, if we can prove there is a black hole then theres only 2 answers there either a end to the universe or there is a alternate dimension

Insects have the benefit of a keratin* exoskeleton that allows flight while exerting half of the effort.

An insect only needs to "flap" its wings downwards and then due to the structure of the exoskeleton, the wings snap upwards without exerting effort. Half the work, twice the results.

or a solid mass with a gravity so strong that it pulls everything to it.

i dont think we can successfully make a blackhole. its not possible, we dont have anything on this planet that can have that strong of a gravity field, plus if they actually create one, we're done for. a black hole feeds and feeds. it would egulf this world.

they are seeing a black hole as a mysterious hole that may have another side.
not as a matter so dense that it has more gravity than we can even imagine.
the gravitaional pull is so strong that nothing can escape it, anything that somes near it ultimatly gets caught in it.
and once it reaches the surface of the matter, the gravity crushes it to basically nothing.

if they created that in a lab then that lab would be sucked into it.
then the building that the lab is in,
then the things around that building and so on.

there wouldnt be any way to stop it bc anything you threw at it would just become part of it.

youre right, einstein was wrong. sorry. lol

you need to do some more research on the subject. time DOES slow down the faster you move, the closer you get to the speed of light. its called time dilation. its been proven many times in a variety of ways. time isnt just affected by speed either, gravity affects it too. the more gravity, the faster time moves. the clocks on satellites actually have to be corrected from both velocity and the lesser gravity.

some reading for you:

time slows down when you approach the speed of light?

black holes have whats called an event horizon. the "point of no return" so to speak. if you remain outside the event horizon you wont necessarily get sucked in. so microscopic black holes would have a very small event horizon and if contained in an appropriately sized chamber theres no reason to think that it would suck in everything. look at our own galaxy, the milky way. theres a black hole in the center of it, and we arent getting sucked in.

If they did that, people would still think the world was flat.

i really wouldnt say i'm not interested. I am i would like to know the unexplained. Its in our nature. But when human race starts playing god and starts creating (if you believe in it) these things not knowing the reprocutions..........its scary. i mean they want to see if they can create a black hole. fine. But what will happen if they do? There is nothing good that can possibly come from it.

I dont belive in time travel either. Sure there are theories and small experiments but i dont think you can actually 'travel' in time. even if it is 5 minutes.

Some stuff should just be left alone. its great we learn about them. Its another to mess around with them.

just my .02

its all relative. you cant "skip" time. i dont think you could ever just zap yourself to 1955 in your 1985 delorean or anything or forward for that matter. but with increased speed it would be possible to go forward in time while aging at a slower rate, giving the perception of time travel. and at the end of the day thats all that really matters. like the spaceship example i gave before, if i blasted off for 10 yrs (my time) and came back many years later (Earth time) i probably wouldnt care that i "technically" didnt "time travel". id be like "holy shit its the future!!" lol.

but you should check out a movie called Primer. its a small independent film but it have a very interesting theory for travelling back in time.

b. Can we make a black hole in a lab?

I'm sure we can. However, creating a true singularity ANYWHERE near this planet would screw the royal pooch.

c. Is time travel possible?

Depends on your definition of time travel.

Hovering directly above the event horizon of a black hole is a QUICK way to bring about time dilation (read above), as is traveling near the speed of light.

Is time travel going to be similar to driving a DeLorean 88MPH or slinging a Klingon ship around the sun? Hardly. But given research, it might be possible to cruise the 4th dimension.

Answering the "does the universe have an end" question is rather easy. The universe is expanding, we have lots of evidence to support this.

Can an area of infinite volume expand? No. That's like saying infinity plus one. No such thing exists.
