Hi,
just wanted to know what the average cost for building a ls/vtec motor would be. Is 4000 about rite for a decient built ls/vtec?
Ac :(

It really depends. What parts do you already have? What car is getting the engine?

well lets see... ls block goes for like 400... ctr pistons 300....b16 head 450... and you might want to port and polish it(900). then some ctr camshafts 500....tranny... clutch all that.. hmmm that sounds about right.. to me

i got a guy who said like 5 grand. but its fully built blue printed and balance bottom end and race pot and polised head. with type r manifold, ctr pistons, and type r tanny with lsd. he said mostly type r parts would be installed ie water and oil pump small stuff like that. is that a good deal? what else should i bee looking to get?

wow.. 5000 for all OEM parts? for 5 g's expect to get aftermarket rods and pistons at least.
balancing only costs about 200-300 if you know the right people

too much

hi,
what should i be looking to pay for the set up i listed above?
ac

Hell my balance job cost me $120, I brought him my stuff and he said he didn't have to touch anything on the pistons or rods as they were well balanced to begin with and he had to remove a little of my crank. :)

Importreview.com did a great article on this. I think its about 5000 in parts and labor with out the LS motor. If you want it done right remember cheap things end up haunting you 1/2 the times.

All prices are about average, not as hearsay.

LS block = 400
B16A head = 550**
Hydro tranny = 650 *GSR/SIR
Clutch = 300
Linkage = 100
Axles = 250
Engine harness = 150 *depends on OBD1 or OBD2 costs may be higher
ECU = 250 *stock GSR or programmed P28

Pistons B16A = 25/ea *cannot use with aftermarket rods.
Rings 81mm = 20/ea
ARP rod bolts = 45 *for the LS rods if you are planing on using them.

Pistons aftermarket = 425/set *comes with rings, can use on stock rods if machined.

Rods = 350 *Eagles. They are the least expensive good rods, the factory LS rods will NOT handle revs over 8000 stock, and not over 9000 with ARP rod bolts. Don't cheap out here, these are the heart of your engine. Failure here can result in all your money lost.

Rod bearings = 64
Head gasket = 55
Other misc gaskets for install = 100 (oil pan, camshaft, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, water pump, oil pump, etc, etc...)

**Assuming the head came with intake manifold, dizzy, injectors, t-body, etc, etc.....

I busted out some reciepts for machine work and labor costs from my stroked/bored GSR engine.

Press pistons on - 60
Bore block, torque plate - 120
Balance crank, pistons, rods - 200
Shotpeen rods - 80
Port and polish head, intake manifold, exhaust manifold. All gasket matched - 950
Clean and tank head and block - 100

Now, I did all the assembly myself, so I saved major $$$$ over having someone else do it for me.

So add it all up, then figure about 20% more just in case. You never know what you may run into when doing something like this.

whoa gsr tranny for 650! im a vendor and I cant even roll them up they are more like 750-1000. Most head will not come with intake manifold too. OEM B16a pistons are about 50 each. I dont quite remember. I had to buy some and it came out to 180-200.00. I could of gotten CTR alot cheaper but was in desperate need.

I have seen cars run fine on LS pistons, you have to be careful with your cam gears and the cams you run. It just doesn't make any sense not to replace them. You have the engine apart already you migh as well go for more compression.

brand new from "happycorepuppy" on hondavision. but i think it was an only set .. :)

is it true that the b18 and b16 have the same bore but just different stroke. giving it more displacement

heres a list of te costs of how much machine work ill cost me for my ls/vtec
(PRices are in cdn)

Shotpeen rods $60
Resize rods for arp bolts $75 ($10 for installation and $45 for the bolts)
Hone block $50
Clean block, crank, rods $90
Rod/Piston alignment/press pin in $55
Polish Crank $50
balance bottom end (flywheel, crank, rods, pistons) $195
flywheel lighten $90
flywheel resurface $50
knife-edge crank - $180

The guy also says new HONDA rod/main bearings would cost $300+ !!
arp head studs $80-100

Do it right or not at all

B18 block
gsr girdle
spoon oil pump
type r water pump (or gsr)
Crower crank
Eagle rods
12:6:1 Je srp pistons
bored 81.5 with eagle sleeves
golden eagle ls vtec kit
b16 head port polished milled and hot tanked
super tech valve springs
titanium retainers
(can do bronze valve guides but they wear out faster)
buddy club spec IV cams
skunk 2 pro series cam gears
Toda timing belt (kevlar)
Skunk 2 intake manifold
skunk 2 fuel rail
310 RC injectors
sard fuel pressure regulator
walbro fuel pump
blox throttle body with tps (throttle positioning system)
password jdm intake carbon fiber
b16 tranny
short shifter
act lightened flywheel
act street racing clutch
arp flywheel bolts
iridium NGK spark plugs
vision spark plug wires
skunk 2 cam seal
type R red valve cover
carbon fiber spark plug cover
p28 ecu
skunk 2 oil cap
password JDM magnetic oil and tranny plug
buddy club header and test pipe
RSR exhaust
tein coilovers springs and shocks
skunk 2 front and rear camber kits
sustec front and rear strut bars
( i only need front and rear skunk2 lower control arms)( and I might get traction bars)
(and if you really want to be crazy go itbs (individual throttle bodies))

Anyway this is my ls vtec build and it was expensive to say the least but done right damn right let me know what you think.
