Well I am about to quit smoking for the third time in my life and this time after talking to my doctor I am going to try Chantix. The first two times I was smoking 1-2 packs a day and quit cold turkey for as long as 9 months but went back to it when I started working my summer construction job. On those really hot days it was easier to smoke a cig or two during lunch break than try to choke down some food that always ended up making me sick from the heat and hard work.

This time I told my wife that I would quit and be smoke free in 2010. She has been on a health kick and has been trying to get me healthy as well. We have started eating better, going to gym and working on our existing health issues. We both are in my brother's wedding in July and this is my last vice that I need to give up. The wierd thing is though that quitting this time cold turkey has been misrable. I have been cheating a ton and I am only smoking a pack a week if that. So today at my physical my doc suggested Chantix and I said sign me up.

I have a couple of friends and family that have used it with success the only thing that worries me is the possible side effects. Has anyone on here used Chantix? I hear the dreams are way messed up and that some people get nausous off of it. I am not really worried about the depression/suicide thing as I don't normally get down. If any of you have any experiences good or bad I would love to hear them.

My quit date is next friday. after that I can start to work on my weightloss goal of 240 by July (down from 290) and to enter a 5K this summer. My Cousin is doing an Ironman race in Madison and he has inspired me to give it a try.

I will keep that in mind if the Chantix doesn't work out for me. I am already down 12 pounds from the weight I posted above. I have been working out for a good 6 weeks now and since the doc put me on a CPAP for sleep apnea it the weight has slowly dropped off but steadily.

The problem with chantix is that it simply fucks with your brain's pleasure receptors.

it makes smoking not pleasureable... but it also makes everything ELSE not pleasurable either.
hence, people getting emo and suicidal.

The real problem, is that once you stop taking chanitx, your brain opens up to pleasure receptors again and your body will start craving the smokes again.

so, it's a decent way to quit and to get you rbody off it, but you have to WANT it after your done taking the pill.

Everyone i know who took it quit, but has since re-started again.

Have you ever been a runner? I'm pretty out of shape at this point, haven't run regularly in months, but I was able to just hop into a 5k and run the whole thing, so as long as you keep on track here I think you'll be able to do it, no problem...

Runner - no but I am not going to join this just to finish it. If I remember correctly a 5k is like 3.2 miles or something around that. I could do that now just not quickly. What I want to do is run it with a good time. When I was in high school I could tick of 6-7 minute miles no problem so I guess I am shooting for like a 25-30minute 5k time. Plus my wife says she is going to kick my ass and I want to prove her wrong.

Yep, 3.2 miles. And I finished it in 27 something, having not ran or even exercised much at all for months. That's what I'm saying, just keep on track with the weight loss and trying to quit smoking, and I think you'll surprise yourself. It made me want to run more often and maybe think about a 10k...

Since E got me on the E-cig...I've had no real need for a real cig... been smoke free since may 8th...and have no want to even smell or try a real cig again...

2 guys at work have done chantix...and it worked for them...they never returned... but they said the dreams were nearly un-bearable....

    do what airjockie says

or get a big bag of dum dums. the hardest part of not smoking is keeping your hands busy and the actual habit of having a cigarette in your hands.
replace them with cheap little suckers.

my mother in law and brother in law both quit successfully with chantix. I'm not a smoker so I couldn't say one way or the other. My mother in law smoked for 40 years and quit in about a month. The only thing I remember her complaining about was a "coppery" taste in her mouth in the mornings. I honestly NEVER thought she would quit, but she's been cig free for about 3 years now.

    Best of luck to you.

I took that stuff for a month, i have the rest sitting in a cabinet still.

the dreams are so vivid you dont think your dreaming, its like real life. I only slept 4 hours a night when i was on it. It messed with me in other ways to, i honestly dont recomend it.

i quit cigarettes though haha ... but not really. i got drunk one night and started again *shrug*

I was thinking about taking it but I read the side effects in the ad, f that. I know people who used it and the main complaint they said was it burns your stomach for a while after you take it. Most of them smoke again.

Does nicotine/tobacco hit some people harder then others? I've smoked a LOT of cigerettes/cigars over the last 10 years or so, both while drinking and not, and to this day I've still never had a craving for one...

In for the dream posts! The 21mg Nicorete patches gave me some very vivid dreams when I was on step 1. Nothing crazy but just very clear. It was rad, and if I had the chance to I would probably take some Chantix just to see what the dreams where like.

You know it was bugging me but I could have sworn I had weird dreams in the past when trying to quit. I thought it was from when I was went cold turkey but now that you mention it the dreams happened on the patch. Those were some vivid/realistic dreams....
