All I could think of was a Ray Wylie Hubbard song for the title of this.

So I get home about an hour ago and I had a little visitor on my front porch.
I was curious as to what kind of slithery pal he is.
I know someone here can identify him.
He's about a foot long and spotted.
He is safely in a shoe box currently.

How do snakes taste? Or does it vary by particular species?

Im glad you are getting enjoyment out of this!
I suppose that it was a little funny now that I think about it.
I literally full sprint frolliced/lunged back to the front door with tongs in hand.

It gave me the old slipperoo before I got out there.
    Sneaky sneaky.
There was a hole in the box, just a small one and I blocked it off with a piece of cardboard.

Did you put something on the lid? If not it probably just lifted it up and slithered away

it appears to be a rat snake of some type... out west you guys have so many varieties that look similar. if you had a clearer picture i could tell you for sure. its certainly not venomous, so no worries there.

i have had pet snakes since i was 6 years old and have had several escapees over the years. they can get out of the tiniest space, and they will methodically push and test everything to see if there is a way out.

It definitely was not a trouser snake. They like to be put in a box.

    Nice one.

A friend of mine went on a hunting trip to Texas last spring. When they weren't hunting wild pigs and shit, they went on a rattlesnake "hunt", which apparently consists of a bunch of guys driving down a dirt road in the back of a pickup with shotguns, then jumping out and trying to blast the fuckers when they see them. He said it tastes like chicken.
