what is a Rar file

I've gotten a couple of Rar Archive files and was wondering what they were. I've mannaged to stumble my way blindly throug it and "winace archiver" so I can use them. Guess I'm just looking for an actual explination of what these files are/do

there like zip files, just compacted a little more, download this and you can open them.
