its a shame really 
yeah its cool that a "relatively" small car is now the sales leader in the US
(i say "relatively" because the new civic really isnt all that small compared to its older relatives)
but honda wont look at it as the public moving towards small cars, and they wont start bringing some of their smaller over seas offerings over here... other car companies also will not look at this correctly
honda, and the rest of the car companies will simply look at it as a need to push more crap into the already somewhat bloated civic (or civic sized cars for other companies) making them even more bloated, even less fun to drive, even more over priced, and even less efficient... all the while still pushing it into the heads of the american dip shit consumer, that 28MPG is "fuel efficient" now
this could be a big moment for the automotive world... but it wont be... shit will keep on rolling downhill like it has been all along

...this comes as GM announced 4 of its major truck/SUV factories will be closed in the coming months.

Then how are the oil companies going to make any money. We have the technology to make cars run for pennies a day, but you will never see it because the oil companies have a hold on the production of such vehicles. In the late 70's a midwest farmer invented an internal combustion engine that would run solely on corn oil, but notice how it never surfaced until now, but its mixed with gasoline and costs just as much as regular gas. Atleast thats what I believe.
True, but then again, if everyone were to start powering their cars on corn oil we'd soon have a shortage of food...

I'd love evidence of the tire that will last forever and is capable of meeting the wants and needs of what the general public demand, because I've heard claims of this but have never seen evidence.
Likewise, I'd love evidence that shows that there was the infrastructure to support a vehicle that ran off of corn oil and that the technology could have been implimented, *in a cost effective manner*, at the time of said development. I don't see it happening. If it were possible and was cheaper at the time, then the person would have marketed the hell out of the technology and ran the oil companies out of business.
Just as now, if someone has a legitimate solution that can be produced on a widescale basis and solve our current problems, they would be making a fortune.

08 Honda civic hybrid= 2,877 lbs.
if the hybrid were lighter and cut some luxury's then it would get more mpg
a better comparison would be with the insight (stopped making it in 06)
06 Insight 5spd = 1850 lbs. - 60 mpg / 66 mpg
06 Insight 5spd w/ AC = 1881 lbs. - 60 mpg / 66 mpg (i can vouch this is accurate mileage)
06 Insight CVT w/ AC = 1975 lbs. - 57 mpg / 56 mpg
unfortunately because asshats didnt give the Insight a chance and buy it, Honda stopped making them
i miss that car
but yes in general most cars have gotten heavier and more bloated over the years
