ELD Problems

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!!!! for 4 years I have suffered with bouncing speedo, no battery charge at low RPM's, rough idle, flickering lights, boging on acceleration, non functioning cruise control on my 1998 Civic. I've replaced alternators, computer brain, battery, speed sensor, O2 sensors but nothing worked. Dealers are stumped. I found this thread last week, got under the car and BINGO! burnt wire above the intake manifold bracket! While trying to isolate it from the wire bundle it broke. I fixed that with a "tap-in" connector. Put a stereo cable bundle wrap around the harness, cleared the code faults and my baby now runs like it is brand new (235K), CEL is off, speedo is good, no more flickering lights, runs like a champ. You guys ROCK!

ok soooooo.....i need someone to clearly explain this to me again lol...i have a 97 civic ex same problem. im about to go under the car and check the wires u guys are talkin about. could it be the blue connector piece that is bad? or just the wires...how much is that piece? and do u have to replace the whole fuse box or can i just cut the ELD connector out and put it on mine?

damn 97 civic ex

My 96 Civic is having the same problem! First my speedometer stopped working, then my car died on the way home from work, had to jump it 3 times to get it home. (wouldn't hold a charge) The people at walmart tested my battery, said it was bad so i bought a new one. Had my alternator checked at autozone and they said it was only putting out less than 30 amps and needed to be replaced. The alt was under warranty as it was less than a year old. Put the new one in and was still reading less than 30 amp, tested old one outside of car and it was fine. Also the check engine light is on and was pulling these same 4 codes. HOPEFULLY this wire shortage is the problem. It would be a lot cheaper than i thought. BUT, I am an 18 year old girl and know nothing about cars. I hope to find someone to look under the car for me to check these wires out but could someone give me a detailed, dumbed-down description of where these wires are located?? please and thank you!

After my wife drove our 98 Civic LX through a giant pool of water during a rain storm we started getting these codes.

p1298 - electrical load high voltage
p0135 - o2 sensor 1
p0141 - o2 sensor 2

This happened a quarter mile from the house, when she pulled in the driveway she showed us how the headlights were fading in and out. The engine runs poorly.

Unfortunately for me as soon as I got the codes read, I bought the lower O2 sensor and replaced it. Of course that did not fix the problem, then I found this thread among many more on the web. I couldn't get the bracket off to inspect the wires as explained above. I did put a piece of rubber between the wires and the bracket to temporarily stop the short. I also checked the alternator fuse and it was bad. I replaced it. After waiting for the computer to reset, I hooked the battery back up and tested the car. It seemed fine, no CEL. After the car warmed up however it seemed to idle way too low when stopped. I'm hoping the computer will figure out the new set up and resolve that.

Any tips on how to get that braket off to affect a permanent cure?

Thanks for everyone's input. Even with the new O2 sensor I know I will have saved a bundle versus taking it in to the Honda shop.

Hey,
I recently joined this forum after reading all the posts and it gave me new hope that my car can be fixed easily. I don't have the $$$ to take it to a dealer. I took it to a local mechanic and showed him all the posts and asked him to verify the wiring. He fixed the damaged wires and reset the codes. My problem is that they light comes back on immediately.

I need little help here. Any hints will be greatly appreciated... My mechanic says that the fusebox is fine and nothing is blown. Any idea if the fusebox really needs to be replaced ?

I have some unique other symptoms, my speedometer works fine if I press the cruise button. Otherwise it jumps all over the place. I am able to use the cruise functionality. Everything else on the car is working fine.....

Your forum is my last hope. if I am not able to find an answer, I will probably have to buy another car as my inspection date is getting close :(..

Thanks in advance ...

Honda Civic 2001 130,000 plus a few miles
3 sensors coming on
P0135
P0141
P1298

Hey Everyone, Wished I had found this forum before I had work done to my car. 4 days ago my check engine light and battery light came on, went to auto parts store and they ran a diagnostic on the battery and found that it was running low and said they were not getting any reading from the alternator. Had the Alternator, Water Pump and Timing belt changed. Got my car back from the mechanic he says it keeps popping a 10amp fuse and its not his problem, the check engine light still on, go to back up and the battery light comes on, tell him to check it, he checks it puts a new fuse in it again runs a test and only the P0141 shows up on test. He resets the the check engine light and then I go to start the car it acts like its low on battery and dies out 2 times at least before starting again. I tell him to look at it again and of course no light and the car starts right up, he says its just me being nervous, what a jerk. I go straight to Auto parts store they run another diagnostic test and now the 3 sensors are coming up P0135, P0141 and P1298. Also the car brake light flickers on and off, and that car still starts poor, dies out 1-2 times before starting up. The 10amp fuse in the fuse box keeps popping, guy at Auto parts store puts a 15amp fuse in instead and resets the computer, brake light still flickers and car still starts weird but no battery or check engine light yet. Afraid to drive my car incase something worse happens. What do I do? At this point I wish I had the know how to check the wiring you guys are talking about. Taking my car somewhere different tomorrow and giving them the picture that someone posted earlier along with

1. Find a engine fuse box from a junk yard. that is where the electrical load detector is found. and you have to replace the whole fuse box to change it, its not sold separately. and disconnect and remove your battery. and 2. Go under your car, and remove the bracket that supports the intake manifold to the the engine block. if you look behind that bracket, there are some wires on a blue connector that rubbs against that bracket and creates a short. when i moved the bracket i could clearly see the wire/wires that was damaged. what i did was found the wire that was stripped and i covered it with some electrical tape. the i broke that blue connector from off its little mount, and i used some zip ties to gently pull those wires out of the way of the brakcet because you should put it back to support the intake manifold. after i did that till this day the prblem hasnt come back. so all u need is that engine fuse box next to the battery. i got mine off ebay for like 25 with
shipping` from one of those honda junk yards. let me know how everything goes. i wish i had a camera to show you what i did but it took me like 30 minutes to do,
and it only took that long cause i had no idea what i was lookin for.

Thanks

First I replaced just the ELD fuse,(not the whole box) I got it from a yunk yard for $5 bucks, then I removed the bracket that supports the intake manifold to the the engine block, and I looked behind the bracket, there was a blue connector that was rubbing against that bracket and I saw that it created a short(it was like a wire burned,it was hardly to see it). i covered the damage wire with some electrical tape, then I reset the codes and everything was fixed.
I forgot to add that before to read this post I got the code: P1298 P0135 and P0141.My battery was almost dead,I replaced the alternator, speed sensor,O2 Sensor, the ELD fuse 5 times,so I got 5 ELD fuses from a yunk yard, and I was almost taking my car to a mechanic, but of course I bet that he never could found the problem and he probably could charging me a lot of money!
The only thing I could say that it was very helpful having people taking their time and help each other to save money,Thanks again to the person that post the solution! (I am very exited that everything was fixed after spending two days looking to fix my car)

problem solve

thank you guys so much i went out to my car after reading this at about 1 in the morning and got excited to find out this was indeed my problem i changed the fuse repaired the wire and all was well thank you so much.

had one in the shop today 98 civic lx 1.6
o2 sensor heater wire bank1 sensor 2 was grounding to the transmission
blew the 7.5 amp fuse fixed wire and replaced fuse still had to replace the electronic load detector bought from honda for 25.00

Hi guys,
I've had the very same issue with unsteady front lights, unsteady dashboard back light as well as battery not charging on a '98 Civic (D14A3).
Bare wire making a short circuit to the exhaust bracket turned out to be causing the issue as already pointed by treysawyers19.
Wrapping the wire with electrical insulation tape ant fixing it better with a cable tie, so it won't be in contact with the bracket any more, solved the problem. I haven't changed the fuse box.
Apparently, that is a common issue for 6th Gen Civics.
Thank you!
