if i was driving a car at 260+mph and it started wandering out, tracking with the pavement, i would absolutely have a fucking heart attack and shit myself... i dont know if they would necessarily happen in that order... but i am quite sure that both would happen

I put this in the same category as the Red Bull Stratos project. If I had a chance I would probably do it. I would imagine that the feeling or high if you will from doing something like that would be the best thing since orgasms.

I've done 150 in a Civic and in an S2000... for a car that's engineered from the factory to run at 268, I'd give it a shot.

Yes, good point- but "large numbers" can really be anything. They've definitely built hundreds of them- if hundreds didn't count and 500k does, then only generic jellybean cars count as "production" and everything else is just one-off crap.

500k = Civic, Accord, Taurus

Under 500k = S2000, NSX, Viper, pretty much all Ferraris and Lamborghinis...



Honestly, I would call the homologation limit that most race organizations require manufacturers to meet the limit for calling something "production." The most common number I remember is 500 units. I think that's how many M1s BMW was required to make before campaigning them in some race series.

well you really need to read the article, they talk about how if you want to build a car for speed, you would not have chosen the design they did for this car. but they figured out a way to make this car work so that you can drive it around town with no problem and still be able to go 268mph. It's about a progess in technology and where things are headed. cars like this are for an oil tycoons collection of rare cars

Exactly. Cars like this being built push the envelope for regular production cars. I wrote a paper in high school outlining the relationship between race cars and production rigs. This is why manufactures dump millions of dollars into race programs. The ROI is on the street. Now Bugatti is not exactly hammering out four door coupes but still. An engineer may leave and end up over at Lexus or BMW.

If you get a chance, try and watch the Nat Geo special on the Veyron. They go into detail on the design and building of the car, and it is very impressive. Half of the fabrication work for the car is done by a German aerospace firm that builds fighter planes and rocket shells for the EU. They had to build a new engine dyno because the W16 nearly BURNED DOWN the old one because it produced so much heat energy. Every radiator on the car is hand built, as are the exhaust manifolds and exhaust system. The whole exhaust is made of Inconel and Titanium.
