Sorry for repost, didn't see this sub-forum before I posted in the Teg forum.

I just bought this car from an older gentlemen, and I was wondering if I'm going to buy parts for the car what kind of car I should tell them at the autoparts store what kind of car I have since I know the motor is from another vehicle??

I'm not 100% sure what vehicle the swap came out of either, the old man I bought it from said his cousin he got it from "didn't like the b18 that was in it so he had the honda place put a bigger b20 in it." It really hurt my heart to hear him say that, but tbh the car runs and drives great, and I HAD to buy something because I had NO wheels to get to and from work.

I'm thinking the speed sensor is what the problem is, or maybe just the plastic gears/cogs that move the gauges in the cluster.. The hand for the speedometer will sometimes get stuck on random speeds, and sometimes it works perfectly. The odometer doesn't work AT ALL, but the trip meter DOES work correctly. Am I in the right ballpark?

Hi, welcome to HondaSwap!

Very strange about the cluster. The symptoms do sound like a potential bad speed sensor. It looks like those sensors run about $20-$25, so it wouldn't cost much to just go ahead and swap it out to see. Any CEL codes?

Also, just curious why the engine swap "hurts your heart?" If the car is an LS, that B18 that was in it was not one of the coveted VTEC motors. It was a dual-cam non-VTEC making a good deal less horsepower. The B20 is basically the same thing with an extra .2 liters and some extra torque. You're not missing anything.

Sounds like a cluster problem. if it was the vss, nothing would register at all.

if it's for the engine, you would look up for the crv. if its for not the engine, look up for your teg.

Sorry for the late reply guys, been a really busy month for me. Anyways, before seeing this reply I ended up pulling the cluster out myself and checking the teeth on the cogs for the odometer.. Sure enough, they're non-existent. So, until I can buy another cluster I'll just be keeping up with the mileage through the trip odometer. As for the motor, I'm actually starting to really enjoy it. At the time of posting I had thought it WAS in fact a VTEC motor he had swapped out, hence the "hurts my heart" nonsense. Thanks for the reply though man!

So what year CR-Vs did this motor come out of exactly? That's really the problem I'm having now, is knowing exactly what kind of parts to buy for anything motor related. It's stamped B20B.

After reading a few different websites and forums I think I really want to put a VTEC head on the motor later on down the line. 😈

b20b so, likely a 97 or 98. they went to the b20z in 99 i think it was in the CRV.

This is more or less the same thing I've found. My only other question is, am I correct in thinking that my motor is JDM if it ONLY has b20b stamped on it?

it's possible. im not 100% up to speed on all the b20 variants but that's typical of a jdm setup.

basic swap and is super common , you are having a VSS or Cluster issue and the "bigger" 2.0 doesnt really perform much/any better than the USDM b18b , great project though and you will get it figured out and Welcome to Hondaswap

Same, I just want to be 100% correct about what motor I tell them it came out of when I start buying parts for it.

All the teeth on the mileage cog were gone, gonna have to buy a new cluster lol. Thanks though man, hope to learn as much as possible while I'm here!

jdm or not, i think the parts will be the same 99% of the time. There's maybe a couple differences in pistons, etc. It's not like you're going to find jdm parts at autozone or o'riely's etc anyway. just order for the usdm variant.

Correct , Piston diameter and cam profile is a little different but as far as any gasket (other than cylinder head would use crv then) are same as usdm b18b1
