I've been toying with the idea of getting one.

I have a finsihed room behind my garage (about 12x6 i think ???) thats carpeted and all that and leads to the laundry area/hot water tank.

I've been thinking about putting a hot tub/spa in there.

But, I know nothing about them.

first, I'm a lazy shit.... err, busy ??? no lazy is better.... so if it required a lot of up keep, its probably not for me. So hot tob owners, what all is involved in maintaining one?
is it a huge power/electricty eater?
do you turn it on only when you use it, or leave it on all the time?
 
from what i've seen there is a few chemicals that need to be added about once a month to keep shit from growin in it. And you have to keep it clean or else your not goin to want to sit in it. My grandma's is always on and she makes it sound like there is quite a bit to maintain.
 
my parents had a hot tub a few years back. they only ran it when they were using it. really the only up keep i can remember is to check the water every so often to make sure its ph level is good. in other words you have to check it like you would do with a pool by adding chemicals to it.
 
parents own one at thier cabin... its like 7 years old and all you ever have to do is drop in somethingoxide which turns the water orange for like 6 hrs once every 3-4 months, and completely drain and refill once yearly... no chlorine... really nice :)...
 
altho i don't know the name of the "somethingoxide".... i know it is meant to kill whatever might grow in there and then the product is removed by the filters... so you don't actually sit in the tub when the chemical is present...
 
I take it, its similar to "shock"ing a pool... it;s common, and i'm not worried about it. So long as i don't have to monitor it daily...
 
They hold like 80-100Gals of water. if you want to use it at the drop of a set of bra and panties, you need to keep the water warm with the cover on, or else it'll take forever to heat up.
as long as it's up to temp and insulated well it shouldn't cost a huge amount to keep it going. They have a pool and need to be maintained like a mini pool.
 
they evaporate a lot of water so you have to check it a couple times a week. the last thing you want to do is have company over and find out it's 8 inches low on water. plus the heater cycles. they have a time that heats it up to about 102 degrees. so it runs about 3 or 4 hours a day. but like they said above, you have to drain it every 3-4 months and clean it. chemicals don't get it all. a lot of mildew and body oils leave a ring, just like a tub. it's about a days worth of work to drain, clean then fill. if you aren't going to use it 3 times a week it's a waste. it really is.
 
We have one and so do some relatives, damn things are always causing trouble, leaks, blower motors, wiring issues, etc. These are older tubs however, so maybe like cars, they've become more reliable.
 
My parents have one. I take care of it when they're out of town.

add shit once a week. and if you're good about it, a booster after every use. when you get out you always hit the clean cycle, (self cleaning) just add a small capful of shit.

so weekly you add shit, everytime you use it you add shit. This isnt bad, but once a month or every other mouth you should drain the tube wipe it out and refill it.

I doubt you would want to mess with it. IMO it's a total waste of money for you.
Go into your bathroom rip out your tub and install a newer tub with the jets. I know people who have both and they agree the tub is the way to go. you fill up your bathtub and sit back. when you're done you empty it.

best part about doing the soak/jacuzzi tub in the bathroom is, resale value!
When I was looking at houses people always listed that up top.

p.s this sounds like it's going to be indoors. if that's the case, good luck with the humidity.
 
My mom had one in her backyard and from what I can remember she cleaned once a month by draining part and adding chemicals and then once every 3 months by adding chemicals and then draining and refilling. The top was always left on, although it was in Miami so it probably wasn't a big deal to leave it on or off other than bugs. I hadn't ever seen a ring in it?!?!?! and was used daily (sometimes twice). It never seemed like too much of a hassle at all... of course she probably got the best of the best and it was brand new so no problems in the first 3 years untill she sold the house. I'd say unless you have company alot I wouldn't waste the time. As I am guessing you are single (otherwise your wife would have already made up your mind lol) so it might be pretty fun to have. I also know that by the time you buy it and have it installed it's going to run you upwards of 7k (as I am also guessing that you dont want to put crap in your house).

EDIT: The ^ tub idea sounds waaaaaaaaay better... just get a nice big one to fit 2 or maybe 3 people in lol!!

I thought about the tub in the bathroom kinda deal, but i don't think i have the room.

my bathroom is set up jack and jill style-- there's no hall way entrance. it links both bedrooms behind the hallway.. here's a diagram and some pics.

often having a hot tub outdoors is 10x cooler anyway... especially in colder areas of the country... no idea where you live tho...
 
Its a bit more than just plopping it in the room. Since there is water involved you're going to need to replace the drywall with the same type in your bathroom. Otherwise you're sheetrock is going to start growing mold, your allergies are going to multiply by 100% and you'll just end up spending much more money than you'd want. It'd be a tight fit in there and just getting it in would be a PITA. Throw one out back on the lawn or something.
 
can't... i looked at the rule book before, and the only thing I'm allowed to have outside is grill and patio funriture...
 
i live in a condo dude... there are rules that have to be followed so that the place doesn't look like a shit hole. It's really a nice complex... right up there with the most expensive condo's in town, minus a gym/pool/club house crap that i'd never use anyway.
