You'll find that conversationally, it was very close to the book. They set up Ford Prefect as being more of a drunk than an intellectual, which he was (He convinced the construction workers to pause work, not through a shopping cart full of beer, but just with words)
Also, the "I was trying to make contact with a car" scene was completely off the hip, although a welcome addition.
Things like the potted azaleas, "So long, and thanks for all the fish" and the entire mouse referrence wasn't in the first book - It was the parallel reality drawn up in "So long".
The Vogon's homeplanet smacked you in the face when you had an idea. That's why the vogons were the way they were. You were kinda left to think that through yourself. Also, no "Don't worry!" sunglasses !
