if i took a shit in a box it would be better than that thing. i got my nikon 3200 coolpix for like 150

If you're spending under $400 US, a Cannon is the only way to go. Most features for the price, and they are built solid. Also very user friendly. My vote goes for a Powershot A75 @ 3.2MPs, cheap, reliable, tons of advanced features, and one of the only cameras in it's class to have a line of upgradeable external lenses (wide angle, telephoto, macro). You'll never outgrow it. I've had mine for 2 years and no problems whatsoever.

cannon is a good choice or nikon, i personally swear by nikon and hope to get the d70 eventually

I used to have one of those. It's garbage.

My Sony DSC-P41 4.1 megapixel Cyber-Shot kicks ass.

And it's relatively cheap, too.

Ya, Sony doesn't make a bad one either. The only beef I have with it is that you cant go to an external lense, and it doesn't feel like a camera (awkard to hold)....but nonetheless, decent :)

Here is a very basic example of a shot from an A75. No photoshop, just downsized. It's the view out of the back door of my cottage in the winter.

Just remember, because a camera says X.X megapixels, doesn't mean that it what it is capable of taking. Total pixel count is often used to sell cameras, but the reality is that actual image pixels and what the lense can resolve are all that actually count.
