John Kerry in 1993 Had decided to divorce his wife - And the mother of his 2 kids. During the Divorce his wife was demanding Alimony, Child Support and a percentage of his estate.
John Kerry remarried only 2 months after this, so we can get the idea that he was cheating on her. Read on:

This meant that his wedding simply never happened in the eyes of the church, and thus was able to keep all of his precious belongings. This also meant that his two children were now, in the eyes of the church and god, Bastard children. Children born out of wedlock.
He later went on and married the heiress to the Heinz fortune - A woman worth billions of dollars to support him.
