Metal Detecting

Anyone into it? I was thinking this could be a fun hobby for me and the wife. Get us out of the house and doing something other then playing Candy Crush on the couch.

I used to have one from Radio Shack as a kid and i remember it being fun.

I am sure technology has come along way.

I did a few minutes of research and it appears Garrett makes a pretty reasonably priced line up. I haven't looked into technique/locations yet.

Any tips/recommendations?

Anyone ever found anything of value?

Me? no....never even heard of it. Just thinking of stuff to do outdoors. I also saw something on Geocaching which looks like it could be fun.

Just looking for something fun. Hiking is ok, but hiking while Geochaching or Metal Detecing sounded kinda fun.


i dunno just thoughts.


i would never spend $1000....

I'm looking for a craigslist special $100 $200 tops

Never actually watched it myself, just seen a few commercials. A group of guys that just go detecting and apparently make a decent living from it.

I've got no pipe dreams of finding ancient treasures lol....just thought it would be a fun thing to do. Get's you outside and moving around..exploring new areas...

Just don't know how to get started....i'll research it more later....i guess the info needs to be specific to Connecticut

my buddy has one. we took it to an old property of a friend... looking around the 150+ year old farm.

found a bunch of quarters from the 80s and not much else.

it was a fun thing to do once.... certainly not worth the investment imo

if you want to try something fun outdoors, go hiking, and use your divining rod to try and find the water... if you know what i mean
i could see the metal detector being fun for a little while, but getting old quickly, and you can't really hike and use it at the same time
hiking and stream fishing was always a good time when i was younger, you guys into fishing?
i've been on a golf kick lately, walk 9 holes and chase a ball around, pseudo exercise and something outdoors

I fish all the time My brother in law and I have a 17' Boston Whaler Montuak we take out fishing 10-15 times a year.

She doesn't like to fish.

My brother did it for a while, he found some old coins, the dog tags from the pets of the people who lived in our house 20 years ago, a little bit of jewelery, misc trinkets, and some geocaching fun. It's not boring when you're actually finding stuff, even if it's not all that valuable.

she rarely drinks....she's a typical girl, likes to shop,get her nails done, get massages and go on vacations lol...

I have gotten her to smoke a couple of cigars with me this year which is totally surprising but she refuses to drink scotch...wtf.

if i could get her fish, drink scotch, smoke a cigar and give me head during all of this...i would consider my life complete.

Start her off on a smooth bourbon like Bullit or Knob Creek. Work her up to Scotch.
