here's an old school trick for you. . .. about every 10k miles or so change your oil and add 1 quart of ATF. put a 100 miles or so on your car then drain it all out. . . ATF has detergents in it = good for engine

thats true if your car is like 5 years old with less than 100,000mi on it, but when that mileage starts getting up there, you gotta use something to battle engine wear..and sludge. my healthy 376,000mi dx engine is proof enough for me that additives help if youve got more than 100k, or are starting to lose compression due to wear.
and BTW, thats a 376,000mi non-rebuilt engine
