What happened is you introduced air into your fuel system. When you turn your key to the on position just before the starter engages. Your fuel pump will spin and start pumping fuel. Try turning the key to this position for a couple of times. This will purge your fuel system of the air. Then try starting the engine after you purge the air out. You are trying to pump air into your cylinders along with the other air comming in your intake. Not gonna start. Good luck.
 
spark plugs, check those. once had that problem but not because of running out of gas, flooded it and the spark plugs couldnt give any spark.
