Vietnamese shaky beef, aka bo luc lac - Hands on Kitchen

1 LB flank steak
1 bunch water crest
1 medium sized tomato
1/4 red onion
2 cloves garlic minced
1 tsp hoisin sauce
1 tsp oyster sauce
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp sweet sauce (see pictures)
1 TBS soy sauce
1 TBS oil for cooking

For vinegar sauce

1/4 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup water
1 and 1/2 TBS sugar
pinch salt
pinch pepper

This recipe makes 2 portions.

Slice beef into cubes then add the

2 cloves garlic minced
1 tsp hoisin sauce
1 tsp oyster sauce
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp sweet sauce
1 tbs soy sauce

Mix with beef and let it sit while you prepare the vinegar sauce and salad.

Mix together the ingredients for the vinegar sauce.

1/4 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup water
1 and 1/2 TBS sugar
pinch salt
pinch pepper

Trim the stems off the watercress, then rinse and dry.

Slice the tomato in half then slice it thin, also slice the onion into thin very pieces.

Plate the tomato around the edge of the plate. Then right before cooking the beef, toss the watercress with half of the vinegar sauce and set aside the other half of the sauce for later. Plate the watercress in the middle of the plate.

Place the sliced onions into the vinegar sauce and let sit.

Heat a pan up to a med/high temp, and put the oil in it then add your beef mixture. Cook till desired doneness, med rare for me! =)

Remove from heat and place beef on top of the watercress salad, remove the onions from the vinegar sauce and place on top of the beef and then if desired, drizzle the left over vinegar sauce over top of the beef/watercress.

NOTE in the pictures the beef looks really dark, that is because I was out of normal soy sauce and used dark soy sauce.

I hate tomatoes when they are out of season. That thing looks totally flavorless. the meat looks good though.

Hey jeffie, whats's up with handsonkitchen anyway? I go on there every so often and it seems like no one ever posts.

Because no one post, start posting and I'll reply =)

Tomatoes were out of season, and even when in season unless they're grown locally, they're still picked unripe and gassed till they turn red. Again not much flavor, as far as the salad goes that thing rocks.

Looks good to me but I'm not a fan of tomatoes, so I'd skip them, other than that

I made some awesome turkey, homemade mashed potatoes and steamed veggies yesterday. Best thing I cooked in a long time. :drooling: thinking of the taste. It was only like $13 bucks for a decent sized meal for 5 people.

I had pizza yesterday....... with TOMATOES! White pizza with spinache and tomatoe. mmmmm. That dish looks pretty good, I'm a big fan of salads.

We made a couple of the other recipes you posted here and they came out good. So I imagine this would taste ok. I think if it were put on the plate in a different way it would make it look better, thats all.

That's how it's done in Vietnam, so I did it that way. I'm not really trying to please anyone other then people who are looking for the recipe. If they see it all American looking they'll go, meh, just another wannabie recipe.

Fresh tomatoes always taste bitter to me, so take those off and I'd plow through that.

I find that fresh tomatoes taste super sweet, however it's almost never I find a "fresh" tomato unless I pick it off the vine myself. Vine ripe tomatoes in the local stores? hahahha yeah right.

Well Either or. I can eat salsa and ketsup , but I hate tomatoes on a burger.
