Do you have to take the transmission apart to get to the spedometer gear, if you don't are most of them interchangeable between trannys? ie `91 auto to `88 manual si.

No, the spedometer gear is located on the top back of the transmission and held in place by a tab and a 10mm bolt. You need to remove the bolt, slide the tab out and then slide the spedo gear up and turn it a bit because the splines are at an angle.
This is at least the way it is on a manual '88 CRX and a '91 Integra.
I do not know whether or not they are interchangable between auto and manual though. Hope this helps
