There are two different ways to overclock. Changing the CPU frequency or changing the whole systems frequency. Changing the HTT is overclocking the whole system and changing the mulitiplier is changing just the CPU.
Its better to overclock the whole system instead of just the CPU. Two important parts of overclocking is overclocking the memory and the CPU. When both are changed, it results in a much faster comptuer than just the CPU alone. 1:1 is ideal ratio. meaning both the processor and memory are at the same speed. however, that means speeding mucho dinero for expensive ram where you can just buy value ram and run a memory divider and get very similar real world results.
Oh yeah and i have heard that recent winchester cores arent overclocking so well and have bad memory controllers. three options. 1) can either try and get another one by rmaing it. 2)wait for the venice core to come out within a month or so and sell ur winnie to get the venice. 3) be satisfied with 2.5ghz which isnt too bad at all.
And ditto what sabz said. i think the geforce ultra would be a better choice for the money. if you want the fastest single gpu, the ati 850xt pe is the it thing, but cost a $500-600+. however the ultimate would be to link 2 nvidia 6800 ultras and blow everything out of the water. but that would cost at least $800 for just the two cards. and only some games support sli.
going over 1gb is really overkill. i cant see where you would need more unless its server or do alot of mulitasking in which youd want a pentium with ht anyway. just get 2X512mb and run dual channel. thats more than enough.
