I've always wondered and never really researched it, can a helicopter do sustained level flight upside down?

i would imagine that the rotors would have to spin in the opposite direction to sustain it.
in the direction they go in now, it would just propel it towards the ground.
then account for the amount of weight that would now be on top of the rotors spinning, i wouldnt give any high likely hood to a helicopter operating upside down for more than a few seconds.

i think rotor shape and pitch would have more to do with it than rotation direction
i know RC helicopters can do it... dunno what would be involved in getting a real one to do it

No, a real helicopter can not sustain inverted flight because they can not achieve negative pitch. RC helis can do it because the rotor heads are designed for both positive, and negative pitch
