i got my VIN number and went to carfax and found out that you have to pay money to actually see the report. i was wondering is there a web site that i can check it for free?

Yeah I guess, if they want to go out of business. The product they provide is car history reports. If they don't charge for that product, they don't make a profit...

FYI car fax is hardly relavent after the purchase of the car.

For instance, the previous owner could have got in an accident and never claimed it with insurance and fixed it out of pocket. Turns out that happened to my friend's '06 STi he got a few months ago. Didn't find out about the previous accident untill his first oil change when the dealer put it up on the rack. Carfax checked out clean. Just goes to show ya. Get under there and do a proper inspection and it's better than carfax anyway....

I wrecked my old 94 Accord, had it repaired by a body shop, and it still didn't show up on the CarFax I ran when I sold the car...

not totally true. it provides good info on a car you are going to sell just in case the buyer runs a carfax. then there are no surprises and you don't appear shady.

it's worth $30 to me when i'm buying a vehicle to find out if it has a clean history.

agreed. and at least carfax charges that for a period of time, not for each report. it's a deal, really -- for someone still in the market for a car. for someone wanting to know wtf with a car they already bought, it still doesn't seem like a bad price.

sorry guys i'm not at all trying to discredit the service. it's really great for what you pay. indeed. i'm just saying, you should always properly inspect the car with any purchase (or sale), in conjunction with a carfax i guess.

i shoulda clarified in my previous post that i completely agree with your suggestion as well.

My car came out clean on carfax. However, after someone pulled out in front of me, the shady repair shop swore that it'd been hit before, invoking the "prior damages" clause of my insurance.

I thought they were full of shit until I pulled up the carpet and found glass, lots of it. I put that together with the passenger seatbelt that goes the wrong way, and the newer looking plastics on the passenger side, and I'm pretty sure it'd been hit before.

It's not that big of a deal, considering I paid less than 60% of Blue Book Value.
