These are the best people to buy a swap from, check them out. I think they are located in florida also. So maybe you would be able to pick it up and avoid shipping costs altogether. Yes, they are better when the bottom end is built. You really need the head and transmission from a dohc vtec. So you are better off getting a complete swap and then maybe in the future building a ls block to through underneath it.
