i have a 88 civic hb thats a 4 speed manual and i looked and that tranny came in the 87 hb. the vin says its an 88 but why the 87 tranny? will i still be able to do a ZC swap?

does the transmission say L3 on it? if it does then it is 88-91 - the 88 Civic STD hatch came stock with the 4-speed L3 transmission

the chassis vin is ed6 it is a 88 i just checked i was looking at the mitchell on demand at work and had no 4spd listing for 88 so i got worried sorry

where is the tranny code stamped?
and can i still use my stock tranny or should i use a 5speed ? if so will i need new hubs struts ect?

if its a 4 spd im pretty sure you have to usea different tranny probably an si or a zc tranny.. and also swap out the hubs or get custom axels

It will work for a ZC swap but I suggest you get a Si or a DX 5speed. You may have to up grade the spindels and the axles but I am not sure. A quick comparison will solve that

since the gearing is tall on the 4 speed would that be good for a turbo?
