hey everyone, im just debating weather i want to do a b16 or b18c1 swap into my 93 civic si coupe. i plan to boost this motor in the near future. what do you think the better engine would be???

o yeah,

boost on stock bottom end requires an awesome tune if you want to run a decent amount of boost, or it's not going to last very long. consider forged pistons and rods.

yeh im only goin to run like 6 or 7 psi... what engine do you think i would be more happy with??

Depends on the size of a turbo, a good beginner turbo would be a small one like a t3/t4, and on 6-7 psi with THAT turbo, you'll make over 250 hp easy, and you can always tune for way more. You can make above 300whp on a stock b-series I think. Blanco can verify that he'll be coming by soon :).

yeh thats my goal 250 whp... like i said tho wut i am debating on is using a B16a2 or b18C1.. as i said the swap is being done beofre spring and then prolly not boosting it until mid or late summer. so right now im more worried about what engine i should get..

Go with the b16. It's like $1,000 cheaper and only 20hp less. And you could use that $1,000 for your turbo set-up. Either engine will get you there.

Yea they love boost. Just don't push too hard on stock internals; I'm not real sure how much they can handle stock, but I know for damn sure you can get 250whp out of them stock no problem. If you can get 250whp from a stock internal D-series, trust me, you can get it with any B-series.

holy didn't kno you could get 250 out of the d-series lol, i should just say screw the swap and boost the shit out of my D series lol..i can get a full GSR swap for 2900 with lsd tranny and B16 for about 5 or 6 hundred less. im just wondering what would be the better engine, and i will be driving it for a while without boost so wut engine would be more enjoyable

My bad, I messed up when I said the GSR had 20 more hp lol.

B16 - 160-170 hp
b18c1 GSR - 175-180 hp.

Not worth it to me to go with the GSR. I think the b16 tranny has very short gearing so it wouldn't be all that great for boost....but the b16 is cheaper than a gsr...I'd say go with the b16 engine with a GSR tranny .

Shit there's a much cheaper way to get to 250whp with a d-series anyway.

Just bolt on a turbo set-up and tune it. LOL they can handle 250hp at the wheels stock. That's with a really good tune, just about the max the d16z6 can handle.

Even still if you're not sure, you can just buy some Vitara pistons and eagle connecting rods (under $1,000 for both). Then you can make your own turbo kit with like $1,000-1500 in parts, and Vitara pistons and Eagle rods in the block means you can handle over 400whp now. Don't underestimate the SOHC's ;). It's all in the tune.

Plus you'll get to see the funny look on some B-swapped civic owner's face when you hand him his ass.

wow thats crazy... actually i have to take my motor out and paint my engine bay n e ways so i may aswell thorw a b-series in it. i think 2900 for the complete swap with Lsd tranny is pretty good. for a gsr anyways. and my D-series has like 220 000 kms

Well you're going to have to change the pistons and rods later on anyway no matter what engine you get (considering your high prospects)

As much as i've heard, the b18c5 can handle the most amount of boost. I could only assume the c1 is in the same category....

But if it comes to money, yeah go with the b16. Prices vary, but it's atleast a 5-600 dollar difference.

220000? Wow yea you might want to swap. I just swapped out my old d15b7 for a JDM D15B Vtec after I warped the head and bent a valve on the b7. It had just over 150k miles on it. I think I really lucked out on my D15B, the one I got looks brand fucking new I mean the valve cover on it has no chips in the fresh black paint (except the ones I did from the swap) and the block even the tranny and the IM don't look that dirty but especially the valve cover. It even came with a new dizzy and red NGK spark plug wires.

I've seen d15b's in the pictures from jdm engine retailers that don't look as clean as mine. Hmotors got me a good one :).

cool thanks guys. i'll keep doing my research and make my decision. sort of leaning towards the GSR mainly because i think i will enjooy it more for the couple months or so that its not turbo'd

Well you're going to have to change the pistons and rods later on anyway no matter what engine you get (considering your high prospects.

Too bad 250whp isn't a high prospect at all and that even STOCK D-series internals can handle it. Where do you get that information from?

Not much. I only paid $1,049 to be exact, and that was for the engine, tranny, and ecu, including shipping. I've heard you can haggle them down a little, I didn't bother that cost seems fair to me.
