Big seats are a pain in the ass. Thinner the better IMO. protect the tail bone and let the thighs run free. After a few rides, your ass will toughen up and get used to it. When i rode, my seat of choice was a vetta SL i wonder if those are still around.

everything i'm finding say 'vintage'. fuck.

Noted about the seat suggestions.
The seat on my mountain bike was a real pain in the ass and I had been using it quite a bit, 3 20+ mile rides under my belt on that thing.
I am going to give this seat a shot and see how my legs feel using it.
Its not the type of bike to expect great speed, but I can always upgrade the seat if its not working out well for me.

I would definitely also recommend the narrow seat and the padded shorts, no other way to go.

If you plan on riding up the street it doesn't really matter. But 20+ mile rides... Fawk that with a bad setup.

test ride on friday night, 8 miles
then saturday i did 28 miles in about 2 and a half hours.
bike felt pretty good. shoulder was a little tired.
ended up running sunday instead of beating on the shoulder any further.
didn't notice any real problems with my big ass seat, and i was able to walk afterwards so i'll count it as a win.

there are some hills, but i have no idea how to track elevation.
the gps tracker (runkeeper) i use doesn't have that sort of information, that i am aware of.

so i finally signed up with the runkeeper app and it looks like i can see elevation on their website.
it looks like saturdays ride was a total climb of 2119
not sure if thats good or not.

i don't understand the elevation at all.
it shows me started around 300 ft, and the max i went to was 671ft
so i am assuming it is measuring the total of all the hills i climbed on this particular route.

Endomondo tracks elevation as well. That is the app I use until my Garmin Edge comes in. But getting any sort of climbing in gets a thumbs up from me.

As far as saddles go I prefer the Fizik Arione. Next up on your list should be a decent set of shoes. If you're going to do a lot of trail riding I suggest some SPD's a lot easier to walk in when off the bike.

Took the OL out on her new walmart bike lastnight, she was not impressed with it.
We switched halfway through our 3.6 mile ride and now I am checking craigslist for a used Cypress for her as well.
She really liked it.

Guess I need padded shorts lol...been trying to figure out what works best. I've only done about 9.5 at one time so far.

I havent ridden much in the last few years but for me after the first few rides I was fine. It takes a few rides to get used to the pain.

Your sit bones need to get used to riding for sure. But cycling shorts are good for making sure everything stays in place and you lessen the likelihood of chafing and such. Or so it is for me. Then again when riding my mountain bike shorts are not as big of a deal it seems

If I take a break for awhile then jump back on the bike, my ass is NOT happy the next day.
Takes a few weekly rides to get use to it. Same thing with working out, stop for awhile and your body goes WTF!!! when you start up again.

Regardless I always wear padded shorts, mounting biking with a hardtail...
