this stupid fucking company pisses me off.

everyday i get kicked off the net at least 5 times. and sometimes it takes 2 hours to get back online. like tonight.

thought maybe it was the old ass modem. ancient pos that it was, that wasnt it.

called comcast. not a fucking thing they can do about apparently. said that we got a signal for the internet but thats all they can tell us. they can send out a guy, but it wont fucking be until friday that he can come.

on the modem, new motorola for comcast. all the lights will be on, then go off. then the recieve light will flash. thats all it will do. just flash. teasing me. flashes again, and begs to be smashed.

    wtf

i think we had a topic like this already...not the same reason though.

the problem you have is called "intermittent sync", and its usually caused by high line noise. Shoddy coax somewhere in the house.

I think I've lost internet for an hour or 2 maybe 3 times in the last 3 years living here.
I've had 3 cable boxes (tv) die, but have easily had them replaced with zero charges and zero waiting table due to having friends in the biz.

and what they write in for this is something like HSI Intermittent. something like code 31 I think.. useless stuff to know now.

Only thing i could state s to try to move it closer to the main line without splitters to get past whatever is getting the noise or signal loss out of the way. Usually this is an effects the uplink and the uplink uses a similar frequency as the lower channels on the television. Any static on those and possible issues. Like channels 3-11.
I'm using an old surfboard 4100. Modems rarely die, but they do go out occasionally, usually by lightning strike though.

I've never lost signal on FiOS.

I'll bet you your paycheck that it's the modem. I had one I was renting for 3/month go bad. So when the tech came out, I had him hook up my brothers old modem. Worked perfectly after he installed the new MAC addresses.

One more thing. Request reimbursement of downtime after the problem is fixed. They only credit you from the time you report it though for most cases. However, they only do that after the service call has been completed.

If his lines have issues I would put it more so on that. My parents have shit cable lines and we've had tons of issues at their place. even with a signal booster they still have a slow connection.

change your splitter. if the output on it is -3db, its garbage. you need a -0db splitter

There is more chance of an always on modem of going bad due to overheating than there is in a cable that's in an attic/basement of going bad. A CATV line is far thicker than a cat5e wire and rarely do they go bad unless they're outside.

I would suggest having a tech look at the modem first, the pedastal second and then the interior cabling third.

there is no such thing as a -0db splitter. there are balanced and unbalanced splitters but no -0db splitter.
for example a 4 way splitter is typically balance with one input and four outputs that are all -3.5db, or a 2-way unbalanced one input two outputs with one at -3db one at -7.5db

what you need is a 1Ghz or possibly a 2.5Ghz splitter,

i had a -3db splitter, and the cable guy replaced it with a balanced -0db splitter.

I agree with the order of attack. easiest to hardest.

I just know my parents house (20 years old) is a total piece wiring wise. I'm so glad I'm no there anymore.

i agree with the reimbursement of down time. We had similar problems and it came out ot be the neighbors stealing from us. They use a crappy splitter and screwed my signal big time. The other problem i had on the next house was that the fitting that connected the main wire and the house wire was on the ground getting wet and it rusted a little inside. other than that i havent anyproblems with comcast. beats anything else aroung here as far as speed goes
